April 13th Stage Band Recreates Old Tunes The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, April 13, 1996 13 The Municipality of Clarington is the home base for a 17-picce big band which recreates recreates the tunes of the 1930s and 1940s. About one-third of the members of the Big Wind Jazz Band arc from the Clarington area and they rehearse most Wednesday evenings at the M.J. Hobbs Senior Public School in Hampton. You can enjoy the Big Wind Jazz Band on Saturday, April 13th, when it plays at the Oshawa-Durham Symphony Orchestra's Spring Ring. This performance takes place at the Rossland Park Country Club on Mayfair Ave., Oshawa, from nine p.m. to one a.m. The show is a fund raiser for the Oshawa- Durham Symphony Orchestra Wayne Peelers, the leader of the band, explains that the group was formed in 1993, with Steve Hansen a co- founder. Peeters, a tenor saxophone saxophone player, first moved to Hampton in 1991. Although the group had some early growing pains, the leader says the group has become well-established in the past year and one-half. Like Wayne Peeters, who teaches music part-time in Scarborough and teaches saxophone privately, privately, many of the band's members members are local music teachers. Peeters adds that the emphasis emphasis is on performances, not just rehearsing. "We try to play all of the original music from the thirties and forties," he explains. This means the repertoire repertoire includes Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Count Bassic and all of the big band dance- style music. They also perform some contemporary rock and roll and pop music too. Their goal is to perform in public at least two times per month. The Big Wind Stage Band can be heard every second Wednesday at The Waltzing Weasel in Oshawa and a performance performance is scheduled for June in Oshawa. The next regular meeting of Macintosh Users East (MaUsE) will be held on Wednesday, April 24th, 1996, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the Lecture Theatre at Henry Street High School, Henry and Trent Streets, Whitby, Ontario. All MaUsE members and the general public are invited. There is no admission charge to MaUsE meetings and newcomers are always welcome. This month's meeting will feature a presentation on how to network Macintosh computers computers and peripherals, as well as a session regarding Income Tax software for the Mac. MaUsE is a non-profit group of Apple Macintosh computer owners and users which acts as a learning and communication resource for Macintosh computer users in Durham Region. It is recog nized by Apple Canada as an official Macintosh User Group. In addition to its regular meetings, held on the 4th Wednesday of each month, MaUsE is a great resource for anyone who uses a Macintosh computer, offering help, advice, product discounts, access to a 24-hour Bulletin Board Service loaded in public public domain software, a monthly monthly newsletter, and various other services to its members. Ganaraska Plans Pancake Festival The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority is celebrating celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year. In conjunction with the Great Pine Ridge Kinsmen, they will be hosting their annual annual spring Pancake Festival on Saturday, April 13th, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The festival takes place at the Ganaraska Forest. Tickets can be purchases at the Forest Centre the day of the event. Activities include pancake breakfast, live bird of prey demonstrations (in the a.m.), animals of the forest (in the p.m.) music, and walks in the forest. Plan to attend and enjoy the Ganaraska Forest.
