The Larry Bews Tournament has raised over $30,000 fora wide variety of charities. Tournament co-organizer, Larry Carroll, who has been involved for nine of the 10 years, said he is very proud to be part of such a great tournament. tournament. "The tournament is a lot of fun to be a part of," Carroll told The Statesman. "It started started in the .North Plant with four teams. Now it has 10, and we had 14 a few years ago. Carroll said the tournament tournament is a lot of fun for the players and families. "This is the biggest gathering gathering of skilled trades men and women from GM, and it doesn't matter to the players how they do. The charities are the number one thing," he explained. For Carroll, planning the tournament takes about four months, starting in January. There wasn't only hockey at Newcastle Arena. It was a family-oriented weekend, with face painting and clowns for the kids, a family skate on Sunday, a classic car show, a lucky draw for a trip to Las Vegas, and a barbecue on both Saturday and Sunday. Carroll will continue his efforts as a fund-raiser for charities when he hosts a golf tournament at the Newcastle Golf Course on June 21, with proceeds going to the Clarington Food Bank.
