Council Expenses From page one Concert band ($2,500); the Ncwtonvillc Public School Parent Teacher Group ($2,000); and Avicarc Bird Rehabilitation Centre ($15,000). Clarington Mayor Diane Hamrc noted many difficult decisions had to be made during during the budget meeting held last Friday. "Some municipalities have cut out municipal grants altogether. altogether. Clarington is different. I believe it would cost the municipality more to pay for what volunteers do than what we give in grants." Clarington Treasurer Marie Marano noted the municipality is trying to "wean" groups using municipal grants as part of their income. "By reducing grants, the council is reducing the number of dependents," Marano said. A number of one-time only grants were given out, and the municipality intends to stand firm on the decision that these grants will not be repeated the following year. For example, the parent teacher group at Ncwtonvillc Public School received a one-time only grant in 1995 of $2,000 and will not be receiving money in 1996. Mayor Hamrc says, "We have to be firm on these grants. When we tell people it's for one-time only, it's one time only." Three requests are to be reviewed further. They come from the Tyrone Community Centre ($2,500); the Clarington Older Adult Centre Committee ($3,000) and the Bowmanville Junior 'A* Hockey Club. Mayor Hamrc said because of the changes that took place last year with the Bowmanville hockey team, the municipality is asking town staff to meet with team members and review the team's status. Mayor Hamrc noted that although the team requested $7,000, "they won't be getting all of it." It would have cost the municipality $170,157 if all 33 community organizations received the amounts they requested from Clarington Council. However, $65,800 might be the final number, depending on the requests which were tabled for review. Marie Marano noted that groups wanting to discuss grant allocations with council may do so, this coming Monday, April 22, at 9:30 a.m. at the General Purpose & Administrative meeting or during the next scheduled Council meeting on April 29 at 7 p.m. Spokespersons must register as delegations by noon on the Wednesday prior to each meeting. meeting.
