Three years ago, 95 clinics reported cases of heartworm; last year, dogs in 138 clinics across the province were diagnosed diagnosed with the disease. In 1995, the disease struck 80 towns, compared to 70 three years ago. This trend is apparent throughout Canada. When Dr. Owen Slocombe, a parasitologist at the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph, began a countrywide countrywide survey in 1976, the disease disease was rooted in southern Ontario and Winnipeg. Dogs in other provinces had the disease, but they had all travelled to areas with known incidents, so it was not evident heartworm had entered the communities where they lived. Today, heartworm is firmly established in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and British Columbia and has been reported in all provinces except P.E.I. Once it appears in a region, it doesn't go away. The disease is spread by mosquitoes. Hardy varieties fairly new to North America such as the tiger mosquito - helped bring heartworm up from the southern United States. Surveys in Canada and the U.S. show heartworm spreading north and west in both countries. The 1995 survey of veterinarians veterinarians revealed 487 reported cases of heartworm in dogs across Canada. The overwhelming overwhelming majority, 413 cases, was reported in Ontario - a 10 per cent jump from the previous previous year. Dogs in the southern part of the province are most at risk. A decade of publicity has failed to convince a core group of dog owners to use preventive medication, which is recommended recommended along with yearly visits to the veterinarian for a blood test, says Dr. Walt Ingwerson, past president and spokesperson spokesperson for the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association.
