Special Thanks To the Sponsors The Fifth Annual Canadian Statesman 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament has come to a close for another year, with a total of 20 out of 25 teams receiving medallions for their efforts. Close to 100 boys and girls ranging in age from 10-15 competed competed in the two-day tournament, which came to a close on Saturday afternoon with a flurry of championship, games in each of the three age divisions. As in the previous four years, it was the generosity of local businesses that helped make the tournament a huge success. National Home Video was again one of the sponsors of the tournament. Bob Wing has been with the tournament since it began in 1992, and each year takes on a bigger role. This year, he donated valuable coupons redeemable at his location in the Bowmanville Mall, as well as six t-shirts that were used for a random draw. Each of the 100 participants filled out a ballot with hopes of having their name selected to take home one of the shirts. The six lucky winners were: Mike Albert, Erin Johnson, Mark Johnson, Tiffany Elliott, Nathan Coyle, and Danielle Barry. Despite an ownership change at Dari Dream, the new proprietors proprietors agreed to include a buy-one, get-one-free ice cream coupon for each of the kids in the tournament. With the mild- weather conditions that finally arrived this past weekend, their offer was certainly timely. Hooper's Jewellers also made a hefty contribution this weekend. Ron Hooper was generous enough to donate two Toronto Raptors watches that were designated as the grand prize in the random draw. A number of the kids who stopped by the registration desk prior to the draw already had their name engraved on one of the watches, confident that they would be the winners. In the end, Jamie Parry and Chris McKenzie went home with the new timepieces wrapped around their wrists. Bowmanville High School is also to be thanked for its part. Retired phys-ed department head, Bill Brunt, was always one of the first people to offer support. In his place, Bill Todd did likewise, as did Principal Joe Hubbard.
