12 The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, June I, 1996 Region is Preparing for Closure of Landfill Site by Laura J. Richards The Durham Region is beginning to set a system into place so that when the Brock West Landfill closes on Nov. 30, 1996, garbage won't be gathering on snowbanks across the region. On Wednesday morning, May 22, regional councillors discussed a Planning Committee report to approve a certificate for a numbered company company which will operate a waste transfer station in Pickering. Regional Council voted to approve the station, where trash would be collected before being placed on larger trucks for shipment to a disposal site. Durham's decision came under fire from Claremont resident resident Richard Ward. He told councillors "Kirkland Lake and Peel don't want our garbage, and the people of Pickering don't want more garbage. "I would like the region to go back to Pickering and explain the turn of events," Ward said. He noted since the closure of the Brock West landfill was announced "there seems to be a strongly exacerbated process" to find new places to take garbage. Ward also stated, "there seems to be no complete comprehensive comprehensive game plan for this." When the councillors debated debated the issue, they discovered that, until other municipalities were able to get transfer stations, stations, the one in Pickering would serve as their stop-gap. Councillor Maurice Brenner reiterated Ward's comments by saying, "when I spoke with the applicant, I was told that the only garbage to be processed at the plant would be from within the Pickering and Ajax borders. "This flies in the face of the people of Pickering who are willing to take care of then own garbage. This is contrary to what they've been told," the councillor stated. Ajax Mayor Steve Parrish says he accepts arrangements to include all of Durham's garbage, but he draws the line at processing waste from beyond Durham's boundaries at the transfer stations. "It has to be Durham Region waste only, and I will support this," said the Ajax mayor. He also noted his concerns regarding odours, noise and In Brief Job Centre The Canada Employment Centre for Students (CES) officially opened its doors for another summer season May 6th. The Centre has moved to a new location at 200 King Street East, suite 202, in Bowmanville and will be staffed Monday through Wednesday. Employers can list summer summer job vacancies with the CES at no charge. Jobs may last a day, a week or the entire summer. "Through the answers and conditions conditions I've heard, I am satisfied satisfied that there won't be any odours from the site," he said. A report from the region's Planning Department states that the numbered company 1151162 Ontario Inc. "proposes "proposes to operate a waste transfer and processing facility for non- hazardous residential, industrial, industrial, commercial, and institutional institutional wastes in an existing building. building. "The applicant has indicated that the operation will serve only Durham Region, and would have a maximum shipping shipping rate of 299 tonnes per day," says the report. The site which abuts Squires Beach Road south of Bayly Street is located in Pickering's industrial area, near the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. The building is 1.3 kilometres away from the closest closest residential area in Pickering and 1.7 kilometres away from the closest residential area in neighbouring Ajax, the report points out. The building will have a ventilation system, which will require ministry approval, and any emissions from the building building will have to meet air quality quality regulations. The report adds: "The applicant applicant has indicated there will be a maximum of 97 trips from haulage vehicles entering and exiting the site daily."
