Rotary Park Official Opening on Sunday Rotary Park is the place to be on Sunday afternoon, June 2, at 2 o'clock, with the official opening of Clarington's newest park and the dedication of the Colville Brothers Clock Tower. The 3.36 acre park, which cost the municipality $750,000, is just one of the many projects the Rotary Club of Bowmanville has been instrumental instrumental in building. The Colville Brothers Clock Tower will commemorate the three Colville Brothers -- John Spencer, William Freebome and Alexander Colbome Colville ---- who gave their lives during the Second World War. Jennifer Cooke, Marketing Officer for Clarington, says the tentative program for the park opening has the Clarington Concert Band performing until a procession files past the Bowmanville Cenotaph to Rotary Park. Once the procession procession arrives at the site, the dedication dedication of Rotary Park will , begin. Introductions will be made by Clarington Mayor Diane Harare, and the ribbon will be cut by Durham East MPP John O'Toole. Rotary Club President Chris Mendes will speak on behalf of the Rotary Club and a plaque will be unveiled. The plan is that this part of the afternoon will be comparatively comparatively short, allowing more time for the dedication of the Colville Brothers Clock Tower, Cooke said. The tower dedication will begin with Bowmanville Legion Branch 178 representative representative Jim Connell welcoming attendees and giving an explanation explanation about the tower. Speaking next will be A.V.M. Maxwell Martyn of t #11 (B.R.) Squadron; Squadron Leader Angus McPhee, British High Commission; Don Snider of #408 Squadron; and Dick ' Watson of #440 Squadron. These men represent the squadrons in which William, Alexander and John served during during the Second World War. Next, will be an invocation and dedication of the tower, with a plaque unveiling by Colville family members, Cooke said. Connie Hooey, niece of the Colville brothers and Hugh Mechin, their brother-in-law, brother-in-law, will unveil the plaque. Corporal Guy Cox will sound die Last Post. There will also be two pieces performed by the Clarington Concert Band: Danny Boy and the Air Force Hymn. The benediction by Rev. Teachers Served Layoff Notices Separate school teachers held a protest outside the Separate School Board offices in Peterborough on Thursday, May 30th. What triggered the protest was a decision by the Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clarington Separate School Board on Tuesday, May 28th, to approve a motion to serve 38 teachers with layoff notices. However, the board states that 25 of the 38 are expected to be re-hired due to vacancies created through regular turnover turnover such as retirement, resig nations, or leaves of absence. But the Catholic Teachers Association takes issue with the "bottom line" -- that 13 positions positions are being cut. "This action by the Board is having a devastating effect on teachers," says Patricia Bell, first vice-president of the PVNC unit of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association. "Thirteen of our dedicated teachers are being forced to look for a job elsewhere elsewhere and the fact that you may be one of the teachers recalled is no consolation when you are treated this way by your employer and you must suffer the anxiety of waiting to find out your status." Contract negotiations with the teachers have been ongoing ongoing since January of 1995. Two weeks ago, a final offer by the board was rejected by teachers with a 97.9% margin. Results of a strike vote were expected to be released prior to Thursday's protest, according to the PVNC unit of the Catholic teachers association. Details were unavailable at press time. r™ --n Grass clippings fertilize your lawn. Just leave them -- nature will do the rest.
