Wayne Geen Just when it looked like Oakville's Larry Jackson was on his way to the victory lane, the Open Wheel Modified pilot got "greedy" and found himself back in fourth spot. He eventually eventually moved up to a third place finish at Mosport International Speedway on Saturday, May 25. Jim Rossiter crossed the finish finish line in top spot, followed by Tom Milligan, Jackson, Mike Frederick and Bob Phinnemore. Phinnemore (#11 Energizer) got the jump on polesitter Bob Moxon (#8 Elgin Auto) and took an early lead, only to have Jackson take command of the twenty-lap race on the second lap. Milligan (#23 Custom Engine Sérvice) and Rossiter (#66 Bill Penny Auto), also quickly got by Phinnemore. With Milligan and Rossiter staging a four-lap, bumper-to- bumper battle for the second position, Jackson was able to stretch his lead to about five car lengths. Rossiter was able to squeeze into the second spot as the duo entered turns three and four. By the time a yellow flag came out with six laps left, t Jackson had built himself a comfortable half-straightaway lead. The re-start saw Jackson maintain his lead, but with just three laps remaining, disaster struck (at least as far as Jackson and his Action Racing team are concerned), when he hobbled exiting turn four and found himself back in fourth position. He was able to claw his way back into third spot on the next lap, but there was too little time remaining for him to catch Rossiter and Milligan, who had built up an insurmountable lead by this time. "I got a little greedy and drove it too hard," admitted Jackson. "It was just driver error." Winning Open Wheel Modified heat races were Jackson and Milligan. If Queensville's Ken Donaldspn were a baseball player, he would have a perfect batting average. So far this year, Donaldson has taken the checkered flag every time out on the track (two features and all four of his heats). Donaldson extended his points lead after he captured his sixth checkered flag in succession, succession, moving into the top spot just prior to the halfway mark of the twenty-lap Thunder Car feature. The team car of Fred Travis/John Smith (#55 Repol Printing) jumped into the early lead over Kim Powers, stretching stretching the lead n to almost ten car lengths. Fighting Powers for the runner-up runner-up spot was Dave Crowther. The pair battled side- by-side. Behind them, a terrific battle was ongoing for spots four through seven, with the machines of Tim Peters, Donaldson, Don Coppins and Terry Shaw dicing it out nose- Turn to page 8 I CAN FLY - This young competitor took a flying leap, so to speak, at the Knox Christian School track and field day that was held on Friday, May 24. With weather conditions conditions warming up, and the school year winding down, track and field meets will be staged at schools throughout the municipality over the next couple of weeks.
