4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, June 5,1996 Section Two After winning two fifty lap feature races last year, Oshawa's Derek Henderson has finally crossed the finish line in top spot in a regular twenty-lap Street Stock event on the Mosport International Speedway half-mile oval. Henderson (#71 Carriage Collision), starting from the seventh spot, had moved up" into the fourth spot by the end of lap two, and was in third spot by the halfway point of the race. He was following Andy Warbutton, who seemed to have the race in command. Warbutton then looped his car exiting turn two with just a couple couple laps remaining, and Henderson inherited the lead. "I was going down low to pass a (lapped) car and I go a little too low," explained Warbutton, who went on to finish finish third. It was Nestleton's Dave Lee who took the early lead, moving moving past polesitter Sean English on the opening lap. Steven Knab then put the same move on English (#55), putting the polesitter back to third. Knab (#90) and Lee then swapped positions, with Warbutton then getting by Lee. The top four machines - Knab, Warbutton, Lee and Henderson, then began to pull away from the rest of the field. After Henderson maneouvered his way past Lee, it was the top three who opened up a gap. Just past the halfway mark, a scary incident involving the machine of Joe Anderson saw the Markham driver climb the outside wall exiting turn four. The car rolled onto its side and slid down the front straight in a great shower of sparks. Anderson walked away from the accident uninjured. Henderson crossed the finish finish line first, followed by Knab, Warbutton, English and Lee. Heat winners were Henderson and Warbutton. While Jeff Hanley dominated dominated the Super Late Model division division last year, his move to the Late Model Sportsman division had yet to meet with the same success. That is not to say Hanley (#70) Cunningham Engines/Jeff Hanley Motorsports Chevrolet Monte Carlo) has not had some success success this year. Hanley dominated the most recent race, taking the lead on the opening lap and never looking looking back. Starting from the outside outside pole, Hanley had opened up a five-car length lead on polesitter Brad Corcoran (#50 Slick 50 Chevrolet Lumina) before a caution flag was shown. The ensuing restart saw Hanley and Corcoran check out the rest of the pack, while a battle battle developed between Rick Brown (#44 Wal-Mart/Prestone Chevrolet Lumina) and Bill Northam (#85 Enspeco), with Northam taking the position. The next lap saw Rino Montanari (#89 Markham Driveline) slip by Brown. Hanley then began to increase his lead over Corcoran, stretching it to about eight car lengths. The machines of Joe Selc and Glen Waterfall then both received black flags, with Sefc coming to this pits for a stop and go. penalty. Waterfall ignored the black flag for the rest of the race. Northam and Montanari then closed right in on Corcoran for second spot, set ting up a race long battle for the runner-up position. With - this battle continuing, Hanley was able to stretch his lead to three- quarter of a straightaway. Other battles on the track were also ongoing, with Line Brown (#99 Allied Signal) passing Gary Mead (#88 Cairngorm Ropes Ford Thunderbird) for sixth place, and Kevin O'Hara (#05 O.C. Motor Sales) then catch and eventually pass Mead. At the finish, it was Hanley, Corcoran, Northam, Montanari and Rod Sauder. Winners of the heat races were Sefc, O'Hara, Sauder and Brown. For the Thunder Car division division results, please refer to last week's program! All kidding aside, it was Queensville's Ken Donaldson keeping his perfect record alive for another week, as he and his 'Cartoon Rocket' roared to the front from his thirteenth starting starting position to take his ninth consecutive win (including heats and features). West Hill's Terry Shaw jumped out to an early lead from his sixth starting spot, only to have the first caution flag of the season in the Thunder Car division (the first two Thunder Car features were run without a yellow flag) close up the field. On the restart, Shaw kept the lead from a hard charging Ross Pettifer. Donaldson had worked himself himself up to the fourth position, then third and first on successive successive laps, going low in turns three and four to take the top spot. Don Coppins followed Donaldson to the front, and dogged him all the way to the checkered flag. The cars of Dave Crowther (#32 L & M Auto Collision/Ajax Machine) and Pettifer waged a strong dual for fourth and fifth place. Donaldson and Coppins then stretched their lead to about ten car lengths, with Crowther then diving inside Shaw to take third spot. Dan Robinson then began an impressive charge, moving into fifth and quickly closing in on Shaw for fourth. With Robinson looking to the outside of Shaw down the front straight, he. made the pass as they roared down the back straight. He then moved by Crowther with just two laps left, and finished third, behind Donaldson and Coppins. Finishing fourth was Crowther, followed by Shaw in fifth. Heat race winners were Donaldson and Robinson, each winning a pair. Visiting the MospOrl International Speedway half- mile oval for the first time were the Yokohama Formula 1200 Series (these open wheel cars are usually found racing on the Mosport road course). It was Del Brett who led the pack of seventeen cars into the first turn, with Randy Smith diving to the inside of Brett to take the lead on the start of lap two. It was then David Watson's turn to.try the same Turn to. page 6 '96 Cavalier 2-door Coupe Get over MJU litres of premium-blend Sunoco Ultra 94 VALUE PACKED: • 2.2 litre engine • 5-speed manual transmission • Rear spoiler • 4-wheel ABS • Dual air bags • Easy entry front seat • Trunk release $199 with a Cavalier in June!
