Pam Charbonneau, OMAFRA Turf- grass Advisor, offers the following following advice in identifying grubs. White grubs are the larvae larvae of sarab beetles. They can cause considerable damage to turfgrass in Ontario. Grubs feed mainly on turfgrass roots. However some species also feed on leaves of ornamentals and tree species. Grub damage first appears greyish and wilts rapidly. After continued feeding feeding the turf will die in irregular patches.Turf which has been killed by grubs feels spongy under foot and it can be lifted easily like a carpet. Grubs in turf are often preyed upon by predatory mammals such as skunks, raccoons, moles and starlings. It is common to be unaware of grub feeding until secondary pests dig up the turf in search of grubs. There are four species of white grubs which cause turf, damage in Ontario - June beetles, beetles, Japanese beetles, European European chafers and black turfgrass turfgrass ataejnius. All grubs have a characteristic C-shape, a hardened brown head capsule and three pairs of true legs. Each species of white grub has a characteristic pattern of spines on its hind end. "Remember Shop Locally - We All Benefit" FOCUS ON BUSINESS Of Special Interest to Anyone Thinking of Buying Floorcoverings Over the past year, we at A & R Floorcovering have noticed a change in advertising of the costs for floorcovering. Many retailers have decided to advertise their prices for carpet or vinyl by "so much a square foot". The reason for doing this is so all floorcoverings will be measured the same. Hardwood and ceramic tile have always been measured by "the square foot" now carpet and vinyl will be also. To avoid any confusion we at A & R Floorcovering would like to help you, the consumer, know how to convert square feet to square yards. Example: Saxony 48 oz. = carpet for $3.00 sq. ft. could also read Saxony 48 oz. = Carpet for $27.00 sq. yd. or Vinyl for $1.50 sq. ft. could also read Vinyl for $13.50 sq. yd. In other words - when you read the cost per square foot multiply the cost by 9 and you will get the cost per square yard. At A & R Floorcovering we advertise both prices so there will be no confusion.
