2 The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, August 10,1996 Lovekin Downtown Bowmanville's Toasted at Barbecue by Laura J. Richards One of the attractions at • Wednesday's annual Durham Liberal Association barbecue was a visit from most of the provincial Liberal leadership contenders. Early in the evening, An- namarie Castrilli, MPP for Downsview greeted those already already gathered for the bar- beque held at the Enniskillen Conservation Area. Also expected at the event were Greg Kells of Ottawa; Ted Krasowski of Niagara Falls; Gcrrard Kennedy, the recently recently elected MPP York South; John Gerretsen, MPP Kingston & The Islands; Dalton Dalton McGuinty, MPP Ottawa South; and Dwight Duncan, MPP W indsor-W alkerv ille. After dinner, the candidates were to be given time to speak to the attendees. During the evening, Rickard Rickard Lovekin, of Newcastle, was roasted and toasted by colleagues colleagues Terry Carr, Roger Kilpatrick Kilpatrick and Terry Kelly. Terry Kelly stated Lovekin is known "for his sense of humour humour and long memory." He described the retired judge as "a credit to the bar." After the speeches, the 1995 Liberal candidate for Durham East, Mary Novak, presented Lovekin with a plaque for his dedicated service to the Liberal Party. Lovekin noted the Liberal Party is "a meeting of practicality practicality and heart. We have , the ideals of looking after widows and children, and arc realistic, too." As a party, Liberals know "there is no free lunch and there is more fun if you pitch- in." He said he was waiting to hear what the leadership candidates candidates had to say for themselves, themselves, but observed: "We have always been able to find the right leader at the right time." Wrapping up, with some advice advice for his colleagues, Lovekin Lovekin suggested, "If you support your church and your party, you'll always get a lot out of life." This year's annual gathering gathering of Durham Liberals offered a different venue, since it was taking place at the Enniskillen Conservation Area. Carol Bemey told The Independent Independent that because the riding association heavily promoted this year's get-together, they had pre-sold almost 200 tickets and expected to sell many more before the dinner began.
