Increase in New Home Construction The substantial increase in housing starts in the second quarter of this year is a clear sign that the long expected housing market recovery is under under way, according to the latest figures issued by Canada Mortgage Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). National housing starts rose 11.2 per cent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of 124,600 units from a revised first quarter rate of 112,100 units. "These are the best results in the last six quarters," according according to Gilles Proulx, Chief Economist with CMHC's Market Market Analysis Centre. "This positive positive momentum should be maintained. New construction will benefit from the active resale resale market, affordable new homes and dwindling inventories," inventories," he added. The second quarter construction construction improvement was concentrated in single- detached units, which rose to 79,400 from 69,000 (SAAR) in the first quarter. Multiple unit construction also increased to 45,200 from 43,100 (SAAR). Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec recorded the largest gains during the quarter.
