Stapleton Newtonville (905) 786-2244 The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, August 17, 1996 15 Children and Food rumble...rumble...It's mid- morning and children all over Canada are listening to their stomachs instead of their teachers. As usual, the morning rush was too hectic and the children left for elementary elementary school with only a breakfast bar to fill their stomachs until lunchtime. Unfortunately, it's not uncommon uncommon for children to go to school hungry. Statistics have shown that one in six children leave for school without having breakfast breakfast on a regular basis. This can have some serious consequences. consequences. A study of nearly 500 10-year-old children found that a high percentage of children who missed breakfast did not meet two- thirds of the U.S. Recommended Recommended Daily Allowance for vitamins and minerals. In particular, the key nutrients nutrients important for growth and development - vitamins A, Bz, Be, D, E, as well as calcium and magnesium - were found to be much more deficient in those children who routinely skipped breakfast. The importance of initiating initiating healthy eating habits and dietary choices early in a child's life cannot be underestimated. underestimated. As reported in a recent issue of the White- hall-Robins Report -a nutrition nutrition newsletter for Canadian health care professionals -- eating patterns established in childhood often persist into adolescence and adulthood. Also important to note is that poor dietary habits can result in nutritional imbalances that contribute to a host of short and long-term health'prob- lems as adults. Children from kindergarten to grade six are most likely to snack. Apart from missing a healthy breakfast, children from kindergarten to Grade 6 are the highest snackers among the general population. population. According to the Whitehall-Robins Report's fall issue entitled, "The Importance of Pediatric Nutrition," by the time a child reaches adolescence, it is estimated that 25 per cent of his or her calories in an average day will come from snack foods! While properly chosen snacks can be a nutritional nutritional benefit, chips, popcorn and pretzels (all foods high in fat and/or salt content) topped the list of children's favorite snack foods. Another major factor contributing contributing to weight problems and lack of nutrition among today's children is a decrease in physical activity. A recent study suggests that the increasing number of overweight overweight and obese children may be due to decreased physical activity rather than an increase in food intake. One survey showed that 80 per cent of children ages six to nine reported watching television as their main afterschool afterschool and Saturday activity, while only 53 per cent said they played outside. Prolonged Prolonged periods of inactivity while watching television will decrease à child's metabolic metabolic rate which may be directly associated with obesity. obesity. Children expressing a fear of being overweight or obese is a sign that eating disorders are rooted at a very early age and usually come into full blossom during adolescence. A study reported in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association showed that an alarming 40 per cent of children studied had reported dieting occasionally or very often. While three nutritionally- balanced meals a day are recommended for growth and development, many Canadian kids cannot be guaranteed this, so including a multi-vitamin in a child's daily diet will help ensure a child receives the recommended recommended nutrient intake of vitamins and minerals.
