The four-day Chrysler Mosport 500 event kicks off tomorrow (Thursday, August 22) with an open opportunity opportunity to see the race car drivers testing their machines. "This is the first time we've had open testing for the public," says Charles Stancer, Mosport's national sales manager. "People can come out and watch the guys practice." Thursday's open testing runs from 9 :00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. However, to see the qualifying races on Friday and Saturday, and the big race on Sunday, August 25, you'll need a ticket. I I Brake for Bugs by Lorraine Manfredo Workers at the Baseline Road industrial park were craning their necks skyward Tuesday morning, trying to figure out why mysterious, mysterious, dark clouds were hovering over the trees along Hwy. 401. "But when we got out and looked around they looked like flying ants." From a distance the swarming insects could have been mistaken for a trailing waft of smoke from a passing diesel. But, a longer look made it clear these clouds were alive. Some commuters around the Liberty Road highway exit were so taken by the sight they pulled off to the shoulder to get a closer look. Trucker Paul Demers from Brockville said the swarms were even a topic of radio conversation among truckers passing through the area. He couldn't say for sure what they were, but he figured the lack of birds feeding on them was probably a clue that they weren't too tasty. COME TO THE FAIR -- The annual Blackstock Fair is this Saturday, August 24. They're also holding a demolition Derby Friday night for folks who haven't seen enough fender-benders on Highway 401 or in the local parking lots. The parade Saturday morning is always a must-see. And, of course, there are the rides, livestock shows, exhibits, food, and all-round good fun for all. HOW SWEET IT IS -- Thanks to the Honey Barn Apiaries for sending us a jar of apple and a jar of raspberry flavored honey. They're located at RR 8 Newcastle. The honey was delicious. Only problem is it's disappearing so fast.
