16 The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowman ville, Saturday, August 24,1996 Safety Ambassador Bowmanville "CHAMP"Among Riders on Fiesta Float Eleven-year-old James Jordan of Bowmanville was one of the celebrities in the 1996 Fiesta Parade. As parade parade "Safety Ambassador" he got to ride aboard a float watching for danger and spreading the War Amps message message of "Play Safc/Drive Safe". James, who was bom missing part of his left arm, is a member of the War Amps Child Amputee Program (CHAMP). Bowmanville resident James Jordan was one of eight members of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program Program who took part in this year's PLAYSAFE/ DRIVES AFE float in the Oshawa Fiesta parade. James, 11, was bom missing missing part of his left arm and was enrolled in CHAMP soon after. Over the years, he has participated participated in several parades and attended attended CHAMP Seminars, which provide an opportunity to share concerns, see the latest developments in artificial limbs, meet other child amputees amputees and develop a Winner's philosophy toward challenges. This year, James was a "Safety Ambassador", riding on board the float, watching out for danger danger and helping to spread The War Amps safety messages along the way. Part of The War Amps PLAYSAFE / DRIVES AFE Program, these floats spread the Association's safety messages messages and encourage children to play safely and adults to drive safely. Some of the "Safety Ambassadors", have lost limbs in accidents and know the importance of safety at all times. Traffic signs and signals like "school crossing" and "yield" were on the colourful float as a caution to drivers and pedestrians alike. ASTAR, the robot from the Planet DANGER, DANGER, stood in a safe area to remind remind children -- as he does in The War Amps PLAYSAFE public service announcements - that he can replace his limbs, but they cannot. The Warm Amps has found its Boats to be popular and effective effective with children along the parade route. The Association's Association's "kids-to-kids" approach effectively teaches young people people to be aware of their surroundings surroundings and not take dangerous dangerous risks. Cheers from parade spectators go to the Champs, as they are truly the best at spreading the safety message. Through PLAYSAFE, Champs are passing on a message message to other children. These same young people want to pass on an important message to adults as well - DRIVE- SAFE! A replica of The War Amps DRIVESAFE Windshield Windshield sticker was also on the float as a reminder to be safe on our roads. The Association receives no government funding. PLAYSAFE, PLAYSAFE, and all of The War Amps Programs are funded solely through public support of the Key Tag and Address Label Service.
