No. 2, Bowmanville m Helping Kids Kick Nicotine Habit The Lung Association of Durham Region is working to prevent young people from ever starling to smoke. The Association's Lungs Are for Life school program leaches students in kindergarten kindergarten through grade 12 that the majority of people don't smoke and that avoiding the temptation temptation to try smoking will result in a far higher quality of life. "We know the best way to keep young people healthy today today and in the years to come is to help them avoid the temptation temptation of lighting up that first cigarette," cigarette," says Cathy Sakata, Community Services Coordinator. Coordinator. "Smoking is the number one cause of preventable death and lung disease," she said. "We're seeing smoking pushed out of public places and have come to better understand the devastating effects of smoking and second-hand smoke." The Lungs are for Life program program shows students they will be happier and healthier if they arc smoke-free, she says. The Lung Association is currently raising funds to support support the Lungs Are for Life program in schools across Ontario. Ontario. The program is offered in over 150 schools in Durham Region. "We owe it to ourselves and to our children to keep them healthy and help them make the right choices," says Sakata. Adriana Nufrio was the lucky winner of this teddy- bear nurse which was given away in connection with the Midnight Madness event in downtown Bowmanville Friday, Friday, August 16. Dr. Katherine Wood, D.C., was a volunteer volunteer at the teddy bear clinic held during the Midnight Madness. She estimates that about 60 teddy bears were seen at the clinic.
