8 The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, August 31, 1996 Is That T Before 'E'? by Lorraine Manfredo If you want to be a winner in this year's spelling bee at the Qrono Fair, better brush up on those small words. That's the advice from local local author Sher Leetooze, one of the Toastmasters who'll help host the Spelling Bee at the fair on Friday, September 6th. Having witnessed the best young spellers in action over many past fairs, she's seen many contestants stumble on simple words. "They prepare for the big words but they forget the little little ones. Sometimes it's just the case of a misplaced a and e." Vincent Massey / Lockhart Public School JK/SK Programme The Northumberland-Clarington Board of Education Leaders in Learning The JK/SK programme for Vincent Massey Public School will commence at the Lockhart Campus, as scheduled, in September, 1996. Both Junior and Senior classes will operate on an alternate full-day basis. Senior Kindergarten classes will commence on Thursday, September 5. There will be a staggered entry for Junior Kindergarten students and the information regarding these entry dates will be provided during the home visits. Please feel free to contact the school at 623-5502. will be held at Ihe Ofono Fairon n The Spelling Bee is open to all students. Registration will begin at five p.m. The contest is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the area stage. Toastmasters President Connie Nelson will read the words. As an ex-English teacher, there aren't many words Nelson Nelson won't know off the top of her head, Leetooze says. But just in case, there will be back-up judges nearby with their dictionaries open. Oh, and one more Spelling Bee tip: Listen carefully. The way a word is pronounced pronounced will often be the best clue to how it should be spelled, adds Leetooze who frowns as much at sloppy pronunciation as she does at sloppy spelling. Kids who think they can rely on the spell-check function function of their computers will never know the satisfaction and self-confidence good spelling brings, she says. "If you can't spell, you probably can't speak well; and if you can't speak well, you probably won't be able to present yourself very well in the business world." Considering Alternatives?
