The tournament should rekindle fond memories from the past five Canada Cup competitions for fans of international hockey. As many as 150 current NHL players could take to the ice in this "best- on-best" competition to decide a global hockey champion. Nine different cities, in North America and Europe, will play host to the 19-game World-Cup. Montreal leads the way with a possible four games, followed, by. Ottawa and Philadelphia with three games each. New York, Stockholm and Helsinki will be the site for two games; while Vancouver, Prague and Garmisch will hold single games. The eight teams will be divided into two four-team pools for the opening round-robin portion of the tournament. Canada, Russia, Slovakia, and the United States comprise the North American pool, with the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany and Sweden featured in the European pool. In the First Round, each team will play one game against opponents in their pool. At the end of the First Round, the first place teams in each pool receives a bye to the Third Round, (Semi-Final Games). In the Second Round, (Quarter-Final Games) the second-place team from the North American pool will play the third place team from the European pool, and the second-place team from the European pool will play the third place team from the North American pool. In the Third Round, (Semi-Finals) the top team from the European pool plays the winner of the North American #2 vs. Europe #3 game while the top team from the North American pool plays the winner of the Europe #2 vs. North American #3 game. The winners of the semi-final matches will compete in a best-of-three Championship series to be held September 10 in Philadelphia at the new CoreStates Center, September 12 and September 14 (if necessary), in Montreal at the Molson Centre. The World Cup of Hockey will be played under NHL rules with tied games going to an additional overtime period. During the round-robin games, a ten minute sudden-death overtime period will be added. If at the conclusion of the ten minute period the score remains tied, each team shall receive one point in the round-robin standings. All singleelimination singleelimination games (quarter and semi-finals) will be played until a winner is determined. Hockey fans in North America and Europe will have the chance to watch the world's best hockey players'"compete in the first World Cup of Hockey. Rene Fasel, President of the IIHL says, "The World Cup will open a series of great hockey tournaments followed by the 1997 World Championships in Finland and the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan." A Canadian Perspective I can remember the moment almost as if it were yesterday. Paul Henderson, miraculously in the right place at the right time, banging a loose puck past Tretiak to defeat the Soviet Union in the first real taste of international hockey. As a young Canadian teenager, that goal seemed to reinforce everything that was right about our way of life; and perhaps more importantly we could still claim the title "Kings" of the hockey world. Through the 1980's and early 90's the Canada Cup was the measure of hockey supremacy. But, the Canada Cup is no longer with us. In its place is the first WORLD CUP OF HOCKEY beginning August 26 and finishing September 14 in Montreal. Once again the winners of this tournament can rightfully call themselves the best in the world, and "Kings" of the hockey world. Lithographed Official Team Canada '96 Photograph.
