f m The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, September 7, 1996 17 Rickard Family Holds 63rd Annual Picnic _ The weather was great and friendships renewed as the Rickard clan held their annual picnic at the home of Jean and Brenton Rickard, Newcastle, Ontario. We had 89 people attend, which was lower than last year but a good turnout. We started out with President, Peter Pearce welcoming everyone, then Beth Markle led us in grace, and then the good part...a pot luck lunch. We had a crokinole tournament' tournament' and quite a few people entered, the overall winner being being Bill Allin of Brownsville. We had racing, throwing and kicking games for young and old to try, with fun being the main objective. In the egg toss (uncooked eggs) the team of Beth Markle and Kay Powell Powell were first with Sara and Niki Tosswell a cracked sec- . ond. The over and under wet sponge team race was won by Peter Pearce, Dale Hunt, Lynn Piggott, Beth Markle, Grayden Hunt and Adrien Hunt. For the less active we had count the smarties in the bottle and Marg Hockin won the jar of 203 and shared with everyone. . The kids races were exciting exciting to watch with some fast times and the winner of the boys race was Josh Karhu, Grayden Hunt. Girls race went to Niki LaFrance, Kiri Allin. The little boys and girls race was won by Meredith White and Whitney Rickard. A new game this year was to throw the wet sponge in a bucket about 5' to 6' away and you collected so many points for each sponge you threw into the buckets. The co-winners were Kay and Judy Powell along with Beth Markle. We had a cracker whistle race and the winners were under under 12 Rudy Rickard and 13 and over there was a tie between between Péter Pearce and Alan Rickard. Beside crackers we also had a bubble blowing contest contest won by Arlene Malcolm ■and Robyn Rickard. The old standby shoe kick for the women was won by Robyn Robyn Rickard and Nancy Karhu. The men's kick was a good one of over 50' and the winner For Bee Club The last meeting of the bee club was held on August 3, 1996 at the home of Joshua Bowman. We completed the meeting's business - roll call and the minutes from the last meeting. Then Mr. Bowman took a group of people to see the honey honey being extracted from the honey "supers". We had an opportunity opportunity to de-cap these to expose expose the honey. ITie rest of the members tried their hand at making beeswax candles with Mrs. Kellogg. Then we had a delicious BBQ lunch served by the Bowmans. Bowmans. One of the requirements for the club was to make a recipe recipe using honey and bring it for the BBQ. These were tried and enjoyed by all the members. We then drove to see the bee hives that Mr. Bowman has. Mr. Bowman gave us a face net so that we could get a close up view of a working hive. When we came back, we had a little quiz on what we had learned at the previous meetings. I would like to thank Mr. Bowman for leading such an interesting club. We all hope that we will have an opportunity opportunity to further our knowledge next year. Also I would like to thank the Canadian Statesman for printing my reports. Aaron Bowman was Alan Rickard. There was nail driving by both men and women and the winners were Robyn Rickard and Wendy Trineer-Rickard. The small and not so small children enjoyed, a peanut scramble to complete their day.
