Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, September 11, 1996 5 Short Weekend at Dallas Grand Prix Last week, IMSA's Endurance Endurance Championship participated participated at the Dallas Grand Prix. A three hour race was scheduled through the streets of downtown. downtown. Terry MacDonald- Cadicux and Marty Miller were to team up in a new Firebird, Firebird, as their #35 was crunched ■ during the last lap of the last race. Even though MacDonald- Cadieux was quicker through the streets than Miller, he went on to qualify the #33 Pontiac. During the ten minutes .of qualifying qualifying there were a number of accidents and yellow flags. The fastest Miller went placed the Goodwrench/Mobil 1/Snap on/PPG Firebird 16th on the grid. MacDonald-Cadieux was feeling pretty good about the race. As she continued to be the fastest driver of her four other teammates. (Stu Hayner not included). It had rained during morning warm-up and looked like it was going to rain again. Crew chief Ed O'Brien was waiting until the last minute minute to make à decision regarding regarding tires. As thé start time quickly approached, only Hayner's car received rain tires. During the pace car laps, Hayner radioed to O'Brien, "Do I have rain tires on?". O'Brien answered back yes, and MacDonald-Cadieux figured figured she had too, so did not bother to ask. As the green flag dropped the rain came down harder. Into "the first few turns MacDonald-Cadieux was handling handling the Goodwrench/Mobil 1/Snap on/PPG Firebird pretty good. "The track was pretty slippery. Coming off of a few corners, the car would get sideways sideways and hydroplane really easy," commented Terry. Within the first five laps a full course caution appeared, as a car had spun into the wall at turn seven. O'Brien asked MacDonald-Cadieux if she was okay. As people came into the pits, she found herself in 11th place. As the race went back to green, teammates Steve Pheffer found himself into the wall at turn seven. The next lap, MacDonald-Cadieux was up against that same wall. Terry radioed into O'Brien "I hit the wall. There is so much water, the car is uncontrollable. I hydroplaned into the wall. My left front tire is flat, and the steering wheel is slightly off." As MacDonald-Cadieux came into the pits, the crew was ready for her with rain tires. Terry could not believe her team left her out there with' no rain tires, not even telling her she was on dry tires. As the crew went to work' they noticed noticed the damage was a little worse than a flat tire. Macdon- ald-Cadieux pulled the car behind behind the wall for a closer examination. examination. The A-arm was bent and the brake line was broken. That would be the end of her day.
