But, like all things in life we make changes. And so, writing about news from Orono and our area marks a new venture for me. I enjoy writing so I am looking forward to the challenge. to the weeks ahead I look to hearing from all of you with news about the people and the places with interesting stories. At my home I have the latest "Bell Gadget" that will allow you to call and leave messages for me of any length when I'm not at home. To make this column column really newsy depends to a great extent on hearing from the folks in Orono and vicinity. The big news in Orono last week was the fair. We seemed to be blessed with divine weather every year. This year it was a real scorcher on Thursday Thursday and Friday and very much removed from cooler weather associated with fair days and children being back to school. Unfortunately, the tail-end effects effects of Hurricane Fran dampened dampened the weekend events somewhat. somewhat. The popular favorite, especially among the younger set, the demolition derby, was a hugh success story, with crowds witnessing the mayhem on wheels. The animals on display display were tuned to perfection, and their owners and handlers deserve much credit for the tremendous tremendous hard work and long hours involved. This part of the fair always seems to be a magnet magnet for children. It goes a long way in teaching that our foods just don't come from the shelves of the local supermarket supermarket in pretty boxes and packages. packages. I would be remiss if 1 didn't give a large pat-on-the-back to the folks who provided the meals during the fair, upstairs in the arena. This community effort supports arena activities, which in most other communities communities just isn't a factor. Locally, we welcome back Reverend Russell and his wife Patricia from their summer exchange exchange visit in Edinburgh, Scotland. Eric was, as you may recall from the movie, the Olympic runner who refused to run for Great Britian in a race on a Sunday, to the midst of the current medical crisis across Ontario, in particular in rural communities, communities, we who live in Orono should pause for a moment and consider how lucky we arc.
