Court ice Community Complex Closer to Becoming a Reality Ground Breaking Celebration Planned for Friday by Laura J. Richards This Friday, Sept. 20, the Build Courtice fundraising campaign organizers will be holding a ground breaking ceremony for the Courtice Community Complex. Jay Violini of the campaign campaign office, and Glen Boy, the fundraising consultant for the campaign, want Courtice residents to know the complex is already under construction. "We want Courtice residents residents to know that the complex complex being built is a reality now," explained Violini. There were some problems problems in the beginning of the project, but they have been dealt with and the building committee has cleared the way for the complex. "This is a chance for us to gain some recognition. The development of the complex will help give the community community some sense or recognition," recognition," he noted. The celebration will be held during a series of family family night activities at Courtice Secondary School, beginning at 5 o'clock. The event will include a corn roast and barbeque, a street dance and party. Violini is expecting local MPP John O'Toole, MP Alex Shepherd, Clarington Mayor Diane Hamre and local councillors Mary Novak and Larry Hannah. Violini explained the whole idea of the fundraising fundraising campaign is for the entire Clarington community community to feel a sense of ownership ownership for it. The complex is to consist of a swimming pool, a library, a couple of meeting rooms and lots of parking. There is also room on the municipally-owned property to have an ice-pad in the future. Also, there will be 6,000 square feet for use by a business partnering with the municipality. Fred Horvath, Facilities Manager for Clarington says an invitation for businesses to lease this space was sent out earlier this summer. The invitation closes this month." Clarington hopes the business partnership would help to pay for some of the cost of running the centre. Horvath noted it is hoped that whatever goes into the space "would be compatible to the complex's uses." The Campaign Since last year when Glen Boy, a fundraising consultant consultant from the Waterloo area came on board, the campaign has blossomed. So far, the volunteers involved have raised $82,000. It is hoped that during the official fundraising kick-off celebration a local business will be "making a significant significant contribution towards the campaign," Boy said. Boy described a "significant "significant contribution" as being $20,000 to $25,000." Ian Smith, the Chair of the Fundraising Campaign, says the next four months will be crucial in the campaign. campaign. He sees his job as "keeping "keeping everyone moving in the same direction." Looking at the fact that the business campaign started started in early summer, Smith says, "I knew our summer wouid be slow, but the members members are gearing up for the fall. "I think we're on target, given when we started."
