Page 10 CLARIIMGTOM RODEO DAYS Event #7 -- Cowgirl Barrel Racing A fast and crowd-pleasing event, Cowgirl Barrel Racing combines the agility and skill of both rider and mount in a timed, competitive atmosphere. This combination of paired talents is vital to success. Cowgirl Barrel Racing is a timed event. The contestant rides her horse around three barrels in a cloverleaf pattern in the shortest shortest possible time. Only the tightest turns make the grade - but not too tight, because if a barrel is knocked over a five second penalty is added to the completed time. Speed down the final stretch is also important, with many riders using every inch of the arena to pull up after a fast run. The competition is extremely tight. Cowgirls are just as competitive as - some say even more competitive than - the cowboys. In barrel racing, reruns are not allowed - so watch closely as these extremely talented talented cowgirls go all out to get P.O. Box 325 169 Sandaraska Rd. The winner is often decided decided by hundredths of a second. How Did Rodeo Get Started? Rodeo today is a lusty, growing, multi-million dollar dollar sport, sprawling over thirty-seven states, and most Canadian provinces -- a far cry from its dusty beginnings over a century ago in the sun drenched cattle cattle country of the old West. The pages of western history name no one locale as the birthplace of the cowboy contests, pitting man against beast. It was 250 years after the Spaniards first brought the Andalusian horse to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1598 that there was record of "contests for roping and throwing." In 1869 at Deer Trail, Colorado, rivalry between between the Hashknife, Camp Stool and Mill Iron cattle outfits culminated in a matched bronc riding, with the winner, one Emilnie Garden shire, declared "champion bronco buster of the plains." In 1883, merchants at Pecos, Texas, brought the contest into town. The cowboys cowboys roped longhorn steers down the main street, their competition highlighted the July Fourth celebration. A summer's wages were often won or lost on the outcome of such matches. A few years later, cowboy cowboy contests were being held in Prescott, Arizona, Canada, Texas, Miles City, Montana, and a score of other towns. Rodeo was making its first, firm steps into the future. The Ontario Rodeo association and its members believe that animals should be treated treated humanely and with dignity. The O.R.A. subscribes to strict rules designed to prevent cruelty or even unintentional mistreatment. The rodeo arena and chutes are designed to protect the animal and prevent injury. Rules governing cowboy equipment are very strict to ensure the animal's protection. Only dull spurs are permitted in bucking events. The flank strap for bucking horses is actually lined with soft sheepskin and placed around the horse about where a man wears a belt. Disregarding these rales results in elimination elimination from the rodeo. O.R.A. animals carry a value up to thousands thousands per animal. Therefore an O.R.A. rodeo would employ several hundred thousand dollars dollars worth of stock. If you had this money tied up in equipment you needed to ran your business, would you damage it? Rodeo competitors competitors are no different - they also give their animals the best of care, not only when grazing grazing but also at the rodeo itself. Good care begins begins with nutritious feed and plenty of water. Good care means careful handling by experienced experienced cowboys who are alert to observe illness, illness, injury, or any other problem. Like a well-conditioned athlete, only a healthy animal animal can perform to the best of its ability. But people in rodeo also have more than an economic tie to animals. They have been around animals most of their lives - and provide provide a high degree of respect and fondness for all of God's creatures. Many who critique rodeo's treatment of animals animals have never been to a rodeo. Members of humane humane organizations and representatives of governmental governmental animal-welfare organizations organizations or the public are welcome at any O.R.A. rodeo to judge for themselves. themselves.
