Bell says, "the same basic principles used in water colours colours and oil painting arc used" in Bunka Embroidery. "You're just applying the techniques in a different medium." medium." The use of colour as well as different shades of the same colours help to create "shading, texture and the depth" within the picture, Bell explained. The whole idea is "to make it look real," she says. Bell says Bunka Japanese embroidery is "an art form more than craft, because A punchy method. Bunka Japanese Embroidery doesn't look hard to do when instructor Ann Bell is behind behind the needle. Bell has been teaching the embroidery method for several years and enjoys getting new people hooked on the creative art form which gives people pictures pictures which resemble oil paintings in the end. when a picture is finished it looks like an oil painting." Also, this type of embroidery embroidery is fragile and needs to be placed under glass. On Friday morning, Aug. 30, Bell's living room on Lillian Lillian Crescent in Newcastle Village was chock full of frames containing pictures her students had completed and had submitted to the Peterborough Peterborough Agricultural Fair. Most of them were adorned with first, second and third prize ribbons. "I am pleased with the performance of my students," she said with a bright smile. She noted most of her students students find the form of embroidery embroidery relaxing. Bell also finds this art form relaxing and adds: "I get great satisfaction out of the finished product." Bell is gearing up for the next season of teaching this form of fine embroidery. Beginners pay less than $50 for a kit which comes with everything needed, including including the punch needle, thread, a working frame, a screen printed canvas, and general instructions. Bell, who teaches the techniques involved, tries to place beginners beginners alongside more experienced experienced embroiderers. While the embroidery form looks easy, Bell says, "it's not as easy as paint-bynumber, paint-bynumber, because when it is finished it won't look the •< •< •< -C -< ■6 ■< •C ■t ■< •C •< •< •< -C Our students arc - C performing at ' t Wonderland, ' J Raptor Dance " 5 Team and backup . £ dancers lo bands. . That's because students are allowed to put their creativity creativity into their pieces. "They have the license to put their own ideas into it," Bell said. "Everyone will blend them differently." Bell noted many of her students enjoy working with kits. However, she says, when she finds someone who wants to do their own de signs, she will work. with them. As for herself, Bell has designed designed pieces and worked from pre-screened kits. She enjoys both. If you doubt it, just ask how many pieces she has on the go at any one time. The new travel brochures are arriving daily; and the dreams are being made of that special holiday for the coming winter. At the same time as dreams are being made by you, there are other people out there who are making plans for your money also! Now is the time that you will start to see a number of SCAMS INCLUDING TRAVEL! Be aware, that when dealing with travel agencies that are properly properly registered by the Ontario Government; your travel plans and funds are protected by the Ontario Travel Compensation Fund! That should immediately alert you to the fact that if you are NOT dealing with an Ontario Based Travel Company then your funds are not protected. Scams come in all shapes and sizes such as some of the following we hove encountered: • a little ad in the classified section section of the paper offering a cruise for $299.00 call (xxx) xxxxxxx • a mailer telling you to come to a presentation and you have won a trip for two ... no obligation • a phone call stating that you have been selected as a finalist for a trip; do you have a credit card? • or something as harmless as filling out a form at the fair In all cases they have something in common ... they sound too good to be true! The other factor that they have in common is that they will inevitably ask for your credit card number in order to put a small deposit to hold your special cabin or space. The rest is as they say ... history history or experience. Remember, your travel agent is in business for you; to protect your investment and to help share in your dreams. If in doubt, call your agent first for some advice. Remember if it sounds too good to be true ... it is! If you have travel tips that you wont to share in this column, call Blessings Travel.
