For more information please contact Darrell Staley at (905) 987-1388 Durham Beat Whitby Jail to Close Last week the province announced that it would be closing closing 14 jails in Central Ontario -- Whitby among them -- over the next three years. The province plans to phase in a "more compact system of five institutions." Ontario Solicitor General and Minister of Correctional Services, Bob Runciman, said the overhaul was essential in order to reduce operating costs and increase efficiency. "The cost of operating Ontario's adult correctional system is currently one of the highest of any jurisdiction in the country," Runciman said. "We intend to introduce a system that reduces operating costs to among the lowest in Canada." Final decisions have been made to close jails in Whitby, Lindsay, Peterborough, Cobourg, Toronto, Barrie, Owen Sound and Parry Sound. Also slated to close are the Mill- brook Correctional Centre, Vanier Centre for Women, Ontario Ontario Correctional Institution, Guelph Correction Centre, Mim- ico Complex and the Niagara Detention Centre. In place of the closed jails, two large "spartan" facilities are planned for as-yet-undetermined sites to the north and east of Metro Toronto. Police Warn of Train Hazards Durham Regional Police are getting tough with careless motorists and people who take shortcuts across train tracks. Those who trespass on the tracks may be fined or jailed the police warn. "Under the Federal Railway Safety Act and Ontario laws, we can apprehend and prosecute trespassers and drivers who ignore railway crossing safety rules," said Detective Sgt. Don Ross of the Canadian Pacific Police Service. The CP police and the Durham Regional police will be targeting selected public crossings and known trespass areas in a "one-day blitz" on Wednesday, September 18. Individuals Individuals caught trespassing will be warned and possibly issued fines or summonsed to appear in court, said Sgt. Ross. Man Charged in GM Fraud A General Motors worker from Courtice has been charged in a $60,000 fraud involving false warranty claims. Earlier this year, General Motors informed the police of a possible fraud. Detectives with the major fraud unit investigated investigated and ascertained that false warranty claims had been submitted over a four year period between 1992 and 1996. Forged and stolen documents were used to support these claims. Investigation also revealed that cheques and Visa credits issued to third parties, were also converted from GM. A total of 32 fraud charges have been Jaid. Boro Simeunovich, aged 41, of Courtice, was arrested on September 11. Simeunovich had worked at GM for 19 years.
