There was always the usual banter while we suited up for a game, and the topic of discussion usually centered around recent games we had been involved in. Most of the stories were typical of any game when nothing out of the ordinary occurred. There were the usual things. Name-calling by fans, players, coaches, and anyone else who may have entered 'the building that night. There were fights, both on and off the ice, as well. The one incident that sticks in my mind was a full-scale brawl that broke out in the hallway leading to the dressing rooms at the Darlington Sports Centre. Because the hallway is so narrow, it becomes very crowded when players are rolling around on the ground throwing punches, making it next to impossible for referees to try and break up fights. Fortunately, we were able to separate the two girls' teams and restore order. No matter what happened, the end result of every dressing room discussion was always the same. Everyone Everyone had a good chuckle, and we went on our way. But there was always a lingering concern that one day, the ultimate insult to not only a referee, but to a human human being, might occur. Getting spit on was something nobody laughed aL Everything else that happens to an official, in any sport, goes with the territory. And very little of it has a lasting effect. But getting spit on is something entirely different. Nobody seemed to have an answer as to how they would react. The first impulse, I imagine, would be to physically grab the person who spit. Do that to a player in an arena, and you would be lucky to get out of the . parking lot alive. I can't imagine how Hirschbeck must have felt, standing there in front of all those fans, players, and"television and"television cameras, having just been spit on in the face. And Alomar's smug comments the following day about the unfortunate death of one of Hirschbeck's sons showed just what kind of person the once-loved Blue Jay really is. There is a wall in my basement with photos I have taken of professional athletes who I admire and respect. Wendel Clark, Grant Fuhr, Joe Carter, Pat Borders, Brett Hull, and Paul Quantrill are just a few of the players whose pictures have been framed. I've got some photos of Robbie Alomar, but for some reason I never went to the trouble to have them enlarged and framed for the "Wall of Fame." Now I know why.
