4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville,- Wednesday, October 2, 1996 Section Two Another Jackman Joins Junior Hockey Ranks Bowmanville minor hockey product Ryan Jackman has earned himself a spot on the roster of the Bowmanville Bowmanville Eagles this year. So far, .he has received a regular shift, and has earned praise from coach Guy Jacob. by Chris Rourke The Bowmanville Eagles have some skilled local talent on this year's team. Bowmanville's Ryan Jack- man has cracked the Eagles' lineup this season after playing playing with the Central Ontario Wolves last year. Jackman is happy to be with the team, but feels the team needs to improve to be successful. "Everyone needs to come to the game prepared to play. It takes all 20 players to win the game," Jackman told The Statesman after last Thursday's Thursday's (September 26) 8-3 loss in Kingston. "We need to play man-to-man because we still leave a lot of guys open." The 17-year-old headed into training camp confident, but he didn't put a lot of pressure pressure on himself to make the team. "I just went into camp with my head up and worked hard and it got me here," the BMHA grad said. ' Jackman, . who is the younger brother of the OHL Guelph Storm's Jason Jack- man, looks up to his older brother for advice. "I talk to him all the time. He gives me little pointers and it helps me a lot," the younger Jackman said. He doesn't feel any extra pressure having a brother playing in the OHL. "Everyone knows he's part of the family, so I guess they expect some talent to come my'way," Jackman chuckled. Jackman received the loudest ovation at last week's home opener against Ajax during player introductions. Being a crowd favorite doesn't bother Jackman. "It's nice, but I just go out there and play my game and play hard," he added. Eagles head coach Guy Jacob Jacob likes the makeup of Jackman's Jackman's game. "He's got the heart of a lion. If I had 20 players like Ryan Jackman I'd have no problems," Jacob said of Jackman. "He brings 120 per cent game-in-game-out whether it's a practice or a game." Jacob wishes all his players would play with the same heart as Jackman. "He shows a lot of leadership leadership on the ice along with a lot of grit and determination," the coach added. Jacob has told. Jackman that his role with the Eagles is as a fourth-line centreman and if he continues to work hard and pluck away he could move up. Jackman feels he has one big area to improve on. "I need to, build up strength in my legs so I can skate faster," he admitted. He said he is very comfortable comfortable with Jacob and the rest of the coaching staff (assistants (assistants Curtis Hodgins and Rene Badeau). "They are all great guys and they'll definitely run a good hockey club this year," he stated. Jackman has one distinct goal that he feels can be accomplished accomplished this year. "I'm looking for a league championship and further if that's possible," the St. Stephen's Stephen's High School student predicted. He has aspirations to play in the NHL one day, but he admitted if that doesn't work out there is always Europe.
