Life Chain Gets Message Across Dear Editor: On Sunday, October 6 we had another Life Chain in Canada. Canada. Thank God for those who came out to hold signs for one hour that read ABORTION KILLS CHILDREN. In our area we had less than half the people turnout this year as turned out for Life Chain three years ago. Shame! Many years ago Martin Luther Luther King said this: "Yçt there are in the white south millions of people of good will, whose voices is yet unheard, whose course is yet unclear, whose courageous acts are yet unseen. These millions arc called upon to gird their courage to speak out to offer leadership that is needed. History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transi- LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The Canadian Statesman encourages our readers to make use of the letters to the editor column to express their opinions and viewpoints on just about any subject, as we feel a lively letters column helps make a better community newspaper. We insist, however, that all letter writers sign their name. Sorry, no anonymous letter will be printed. lion was not the vitriolic words and violent actions of the bad. people, but the appalling si-i ience and indifference of the good people. Our generation will have to repent not only for the words and acts of the children children of darkness but also for the fears and apathy of the children children of light". Most Christians are so apathetic apathetic it's pathetic. Pastor, if you weren't holding a sign at a Life Chain, you should have been. Apathy within the Christian community is the main reason why this sin of abortion has continued in Canada since 1969. With God's help we could have stopped abortion, many years ago and saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of babies, but we didn't. God forgive us. It's too late to admit to God that we have failed. Today is the first day of the rest of our lives. Let's determine to pray every day about abortion. Let's determine to write our politicians politicians and the editors of our local local papers demanding a law to protect the pnbom from the moment of conception until natural death. Let's make abortion abortion an issue in the next election. election. Let's pray for, support and vote for the candidate and party that takes the strongest stand against abortion in the 1997 election. Sincerely, Dave Switzer The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, October 23, 1996 5 Shutdown a Mistake Avery Dennison Employees Raise $2,800 at Yard Sale The employees at Avery Dennison conducted a yard sale recently and on Friday October 4, they presented a cheque for $2,800 to Clarington Mayor Diane Hamre. The Ontario Medical Association Association (OMA), may have reached an agreement with the Ministry of Health. Negotiations Negotiations are continuing against a threat of doctors withdrawing services. I covered some of the health care issues in last week's article and this week on my Rogers Cable TV program. The health care funding issue is complicated by the reduction in transfer payments by the Federal Government. Furthermore, Furthermore, nurses and other health care providers believe that there are alternatives in delivery delivery methods. Our Minister of Health has not cut one cent from health care spending. In fact, we are spending $17.7 billion, billion, $300 million more than last year. In my view, the municipal planning department has a central role. The municipality works with the development industry to determine where new homes and municipal facilities like libraries libraries and recreational facilities facilities should be located. I know that social assistance recipients recipients often feel trapped in a circumstance circumstance that they did not necessarily choose. I know that jobs are hard to find. Someone said to me recently, "getting a job is a job". Perhaps by being in the right place at the right time, or meeting someone in a work situation a person might network with opportunities. Most employers today want a resume or work history record. Volunteer contributions often serve as a fine reference for people looking for a job. Dear Sir: Under the ruse of calling it a protest, plans to shut down the city of Toronto including the transit system, (who have a collective signed contract), arc not receiving much sympathy from the citizens who have the right of uninterrupted movement movement anywhere. Lives might be in danger because of 911 calls or accidents accidents that cannot gel to the scene in time. The small business person trying to make an honest living has the right to get to work. Well paid organizers such as Gord Wilson, Sid Ryan and Buzz Hargrove believe this is just fine. If they want to shut cities down, because they do not like the government, let them run in the next election or vote them out of office. I have made my point very clear at our monthly local 222 union meetings in Oshawa regarding regarding any illegal shutdowns of cities. I agree with Jeff Goo- dali, Toronto union executive. Holding any city hostage, jeopardizing jeopardizing public safety will do nothing to introduce smart political political or convincing public relations relations between unions and the public at large. I do not accuse the union members, but the union leaders, leaders, who have their own partisan partisan politics in mind. All their efforts should be focused to hammer out a solution for those GM union members who gave them a legal strike mandate, mandate, instead of running around the province shutting down cities. cities. ADA LO Date: Tuesday, October 29th Time: 7:30 p.m. Place: St. Joseph's Parish Hall, 127 Liberty Street South, Bowmanville HEARING LOSS IS ONE OF THE NATION'S SILENT PROBLEMS For most people hearing loss Id occurs gradually over a number of ij years. You begin to realize that you no longer hear the phone ringing or you have to constantly turn up the volume on your radio or TV. You can hear people talk but you don't always understand what's being said. Others can tell if you're straining to hear - even if you think they don't know. If you are having difficulty hearing you are not alone. Hearing loss doesn't have to be a hearing problem. Many hearing difficulties can be improved with a hearing aid or can be medically or surgically treated. Some of today's hearing aids are so small they're barely noticeable. In fact, these days, a hearing loss can be more conspicuous than the hearing aid itself. Of course, no hearing aid can restore a person's natural hearing, and the need for, and ability to adapt from person to person. However, when properly fitted and used, a hearing aid can usually make a significant difference for people with hearing loss. Financial help is available from the Ministry of Health. They contribute $260 towards the purchase of a hearing aid. If you suspect you have a problem, the first step is a hearing evaluation. A prototype pair of padded underpants has been developed in Canada. The padding is on the side because the elderly who fracture their hips tend to fall sideways. If the trials conducted on these pants are successful they will be available to the public. The year 1944 saw the first fluoridation of a water supply to prevent dental decay. After 52 years of use, there is still controversy about fluoridation but the conclusion of most dentists and other health professionals it that it is a safe method of protecting our teeth from cavities. Floss is an important part of a good dental hygiene program. The first dental floss was made commercially out of silk way back in 1882. We all know the value of flossing but statistics on purchases show we don't floss as much as we should. Have you flossed today! Nitroglycerin first won fame as an explosive in 1846. In later years it was found to be beneficial in dilating the blood vessels and is still used today to help patients with angina. Originally made in a sublingual (under the tongue) tablet, it is now also available in a much more stable spray format. After meals! Before meals! With water or milk! Will it make me drowsy! Is it OK to have an alcoholic drink with this medication! These are just some of the questions in peoples' minds when they receive a new prescription. We'll make sure you know the answers. Dear Sir: I noticed in John O'Toole's column last week that he mentioned mentioned the Public meeting organized organized by the Health and Social Services Committee of the Region Region of Durham on the Ontario Works Programme. I assume that by mentioning the meeting he wanted to encourage people to attend. When I attended the meeting meeting myself I was, therefore, very surprised to find that not only was John O'Toole not present but neither was there any M.P.P. of the government B l>rcscnt to defend their lation. There was a 'pro' mike and a 'con' mike. No one spoke at the 'pro' mike even though Regional Councillors attended to hear points of view upon which to make up their minds on the implementation of Ontario Works and especially especially the workfare component, in Durham Region, I have rarely witnessed such a blatant expression expression of political irresponsi- Yours sincerely, Rev.
