» The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanville, Wednesday, October 30, 1996 3 Average Class Is Getting Larger, School Bd. Told The Northumberland-Clarington School Board's concerns concerns about numbers aren't just in the realm of dollars and cents. The trustees and administrators are also keeping an eye on increasing numbers of students in each classroom. John Reid, the board's Superintendent of Human Resources, Resources, told trustees on Thursday night, OcL 24 at Orono Public School, "class size has always generated interest." "We always hear about the high numbers," Reid said. He pointed out there are a lot of "peaks and valleys" and that there isn't a constant climb. One of the factors in recent years for larger number of students in the classroom was the social contract. Reid stated: "During the social contract, boards were mandated to reduce teaching staff by five per cent." That added students to classes. Lilian Brode, a trustee for Alnwick, Campbellford, Hastings, Hastings, Percy and Seymour, noted: "There are over 50 classes classes with 30 students or more." The average class size for a primary class has actually gone down to 21 this year from the 1993/94 academic year's figure of 22. The most dramatic increase has been in the Grade 5 class size. In 1993/94 school year the average class size was at 23.8. This year's average is 29.40. Durham Beat Charges Laid in Fatal Pickering Collision A 19-year-old New Brunswick man will appear in Whitby Whitby court on November 6th facing charges related to a collision collision in Pickering last month that killed three of his fellow bible college students. Charged with careless driving and disobeying a stop sign is Christopher Haley who was also a full-time student at Faithway Baptist College in Ajax. The accident occurred on September 12 at 6:05 a.m. when the driver and his three passengers were returning home from working the night shift at a local business. Their 1988 black Mercury Cougar was westbound on Clements Rd. at a stop sign when it entered onto Brock Road and was struck by a southbound tractor trailer loaded with rolls of paper products. All three passengers in the car were killed on impact. Pedestrian, 90, Struck and Killed At approximately 1:05 p.m., Wednesday, October 23 a pedestrian was struck while walking across Ritson Road near Oshawa Blvd. N. A white 1991 Chevrolet Geo had been northbound in the curb lane just passing through the intersection when it struck the 90-year-old pedestrian. The victim was rushed by ambulance to Oshawa General Hospital where he died later as a result of his injuries. The pedestrian was identified as Guiseppi Chiodo of Oshawa. The cause of the collision is still being investigated. Projectionists Locked Out Cineplex Odeon has locked out 90 projectionists in 13 cities including Whitby in a dispute over wages. The lock-out began on Saturday, October 26. Projectionists Projectionists had hoped to report for work despite the fact that contract contract negotiations broke off earlier this month. According to the International Alliance Theatrical Stage Employees' union, projectionists are being asked to accept a 80% cut in income. Projectionists now receive between $30,000 and $41,000 per year and are responsible for a number of technical tasks prior to and during the showing of films as well as assisting cinema patrons in any emergency situations. The Ontario Motion Picture Projectionists are urging moviegoers moviegoers to boycott Cineplex Odeon theatres until projectionists projectionists are back on the job. Taxis Inspected An Oshawa taxi had its plates removed after failing a taxi inspection conducted by Durham Regional Police and the Ministry of Transportation on October 23 and 24. The semi-annual taxi inspection ensures that vehicles are safe to operate and that the proper rate is charged to customers. customers. L. Willshcr, Chairperson R. T. Malowney, Director of Education ©j.p. by Lorraine Manfredo A Newcastle boy who was struck by a car while riding his bike three weeks ago, survived survived with a broken leg and a fractured helmeL Chris Bugelli, age 12, is glad it was his helmet that got busted up and not his head. "If I didn't have my helmet helmet on, it could have been worse," he said. "I wouldn't be in this wheelchair or a cast -I'd be dead," "If I didn't have my helmet on, it could have been worse." - Chris Bugelli The accident occurred on Wednesday, October 9, at the intersection of Mill and Robert Robert Street. A grade seven student at The Pines Senior Public School, Chris had been curious curious to see the inside of Newcastle's Newcastle's brand new elementary elementary school. He left the school's Open House around 7 p.m. and was riding west on Robert toward his home on Hart Court. The roads were damp from a recent rain. As he approached approached the crossing at Mill Street he remembers trying to stop for a car. "I put on the brakes, but I slid right out in front of the car." He saw only a blur of motion motion as the car struck him and threw him 20 meters. He landed flat on his back - his head slamming into the pavement and the impact cracking his helmet. Within seconds, residents were at his side with blankets and word that an ambulance had been summoned. Chris vaguely recalls a large truck blocking off a portion of the road to protect him . 7 Meanwhile, a nearby resident resident who learned Chris's identity from a friend, called the Bugelli home. Poppy Sales Commence November 1 In Clarington The Royal Canadian Legion Legion Branch 178 will be out selling poppies this year between between Friday, Nov. 1, and Tuesday, Nov. 11. Clarington councillors gave the Legion volunteers permission to sell poppies throughout the municipality and to fly the Poppy Flag at the Town Hall in Bowmanville Bowmanville starting Nov. 1. Julie Bugelli, Chris's mother, went numb when she got the news. "Luckily, the caller said Chris was talking and that he remembered the accident. Otherwise I would have thought the worst," she added. added. Mrs. Bugelli raced to the scene, arriving just as ambulance ambulance and fire trucks got there. She accompanied Chris to hospital and helped hospital technicians get x-rays of the broken leg. A nurse herself at Memorial Memorial Hospital, she says it is difficult when it's your own kid in pain. Chris will be getting around in a wheelchair until he is able to walk. Right now he wears a long cast on his left leg for a broken fibula. He was looking forward to returning to school after an absence of nearly three weeks due to the accident. The road to recovery will require visits to bone specialists specialists and physiotherapists and there will be no gymnastics for a while. But he'll live. Which is all that matters to his mom, his father, John, and little sister, Kathy. To remind him just how lucky he is, he has only to look at his mangled bike or the pieces of his helmet. Julie Bugelli is grateful her children have always been good about wearing their helmets. "The rule was - either you wear the helmet when you ride your bikes, or you walk." "Sure there were the occasional occasional whines of protest and sometimes it seemed easier to forget the helmets, but I'm glad now we insisted." While he has been at home recovering Chris occasionally occasionally reminds his mother it won't be long before he tries out for his driver's licence. She sighs and hugs her son and tells him he can't have one until he's 35. / x Wholesale Centre 623-6529 j COWAN WHOLESALE DIVISION Maple Grove, Ontario Hwy. 2 at Maple Grove 1988 Mercury Grand Marquis L.S. 5.0LV8, auto, power steering, brakes, windows, locks, seat, air, stereo cass.
