Some is just flashy. And then there's the kind of jewellery that saves your life. That's the kind Sarah Durham Durham will wear for the rest of her life. The nine-year-old Newcastle Newcastle girl has been wearing a MedicAlert bracelet for over a year - ever since she had a violent reaction to antibiotics. Sarah was given the medication medication to fight a common childhood infection, explains her mother Rena. But about a week after the prescription finished Sarah developed a serious reaction. "She had severe hives, huge welts," says her mom. "Her hands and joints were swollen, she couldn't even bend her fingers. She was really sick." Medical tests soon revealed revealed Sarah's allergy. Nine-Year-Old With Allergy is Reassured by Wearing Medical Information While Rena was relieved her daughter was going to be all right, she was still fearful the drugs might be administered administered again by doctors who didn't know her history. Her fears increased when she learned that the first reaction reaction is often just a warning - that the second can be life- threatening or even fatal if the throat swells closed. "I thought: 'What can we do so we'll never have to go through this again?"' That's when she picked up a MedicAlert pamphlet and called the toll-free number. For a cost of $40, Sarah received her engraved bracelet bracelet with MedicAlert symbol on one side and the dmgs she's allergic to listed on the other: amoxicillin, penicillin' and biaxin. Both mother and daughter have rested a lot.easier since. Sarah says: "If I get hit by a car, the ambulance will come, and if I didn't have the MedicAlert bracelet they could give me Amoxicillin or penicillin by accident." Her bracelet also shows the 24-hour hotline number, which makes available to medical professionals the names of the family physician physician and emergency contact person. "I feel reassured," says Sarah's Sarah's mother. "In the event of an accident or mishap, if something happens at camp or at school or when she's visiting her grandparents, the bracelet will speak for her." The MedicAlert bracelet is universally recognized. Bracelets are worn not only for drug allergies but for epilepsy, diabetes, serious food allergies, or for persons who wear a pacemaker or have Alzhcimcrs Disease. The MedicAlert system was founded in California but in 1961 Dr. Maureen Roberts started the first Canadian affiliate affiliate in Toronto. It began as a one room office office with files, but has now progressed to 800,000 Canadians. Canadians.
