They plan to keep the public informed and are hoping for a resolution to the situation. Until then, the community community must wait and see if and when the After Hours Clinic will reopen. The clinic was originally established to reljeve some of the pressure from an overworked emergency room. During its two months of operation, about 25 to 30 patients per night were seen at the After Hours Clinic. Richards The man for whom Clar- ington's newest elementary school is named was remembered remembered last Tuesday evening, Nov. 5. Dr. Ross Tilley Public School was named for a pioneer pioneer of plastic surgery techniques techniques who was bom and raised in Bowmanvillc. On Tuesday evening, Jean Tilley, the wife of Dr. Tilley, told well over 200 people seated in the gymnasium, her husband "was a quiet and sober sober man" who would have "felt that this was the greatest honour." She received two standing ovations as she began and concluded her remarks. During the two-hour official official opening, a number of people paid tribute to Dr. Tilley, Tilley, including school board chair Bob Willshcr. Willsher said, "Dr. Tilley is a fine role model for the students. He's a true Canadian Canadian hero worthy of celebrating." celebrating." But Willsher also made a couple of digs at the provincial provincial government regarding its funding freeze for building new schools. Taking up that particular theme was Director of Education Education Richard Malowney, who noted: "We would need to build one of these new buildings buildings each year to keep pace with the growing population." population." He stated that the "freeze on this kind of construction should be lifted." Carol Shepherd, representing representing her husband, Durham MP Alex Shepherd, told those gathered: "He was one of our own. He typifies the kind of people who make our country great. "He pioneered techniques and it is an honour to think about this man one week before before Remembrance Day." Durham East MPP John O'Toole first fired off comments comments that a school opening should not be the place for political rhetoric. MPP O'Toole then stated he hopes the students follow in the footsteps of Dr. Tilley through his legacy of helping hands. Steve Rowland was the local local resident who lobbied the Northumberland-Clarington School Board to name the new school after Dr. Tilley. "I never met him, but I know there aren't enough heroes in our lives," Rowland said. Bill Martin, one of Dr. Tilley's Tilley's wartime patients, told the crowd that Dr. Tilley spent the war years trying to restore the dignity of those airmen who had been disfigured disfigured by their wounds and did not have a particular cheery future ahead of them. Burn Victims Pay Tribute to Doctor From page one It went down and split in half, throwing out the crew. Harding woke up with his face planted in some burning mail bags. He sustained bums to his face and hands. "All my face was burned, and my ears looked like potato chips. My mouth was ragged -- - it looked like ragged meat. "My hands had third degree bums...all three layers of skin were gone." During Harding's six- month stay at Dr. Tilley's hospital hospital in East Grimstead he saw horrible things that he can recall recall today in a blink of an eye. "Some of the sights would shock you," he recalled. People who had sustained bums to faces and hands were wrapped up 1 in bandages and looked "like teddy bears, he said. For many, the only holes in the bandages were a slit where one's mouth would be. "The slit was for drinking. They really stressed the intake of fluids. There was even a barrel of beer on each floor for our consumption, and we could have as much as we wanted. Harding discussed the fact that Dr. Tilley took "grafts from my thighs to place skin on the back of my hands." The skin was "sliced up into stamp-sized pieces and placed on." Once the operation was over, the bandages went on and the doctors waited for the patients' patients' own healing qualities to take over." The navigator noted that after after he left the air force and came back to Canada with his war bride, Olwen, from Wales, he went to work for Air Canada Canada as a navigator. Harding is one of five "Guinea Pigs" who attended the official opening of the Dr. Ross Tilley School on Tuesday evening, Nov. 5,1996. The Guinea Pigs were so named because all of the techniques techniques and surgery done upon them were, at the time, one-of- a-kind. % .vetthmm. Thé cost of the scientific project would be shared between between the countries taking part in the project. The entire project project could infuse about $800 million into the local construction construction trades and goods and services. services. Clarington Mayor Diane Hamre told The Canadian Statesman on Tuesday afternoon, afternoon, Nov. 12, "timing is crucial crucial to us to convince the federal federal government to support this." The mayor fully intends on asking the GTA Mayors' at a meeting on Friday, Nov. 15, to "reaffirm their support of the project." Mayor Hamre believes Darlington Darlington is the best choice out of the two Canadian sties. The other site is the Bruce Nuclear Station. "From my point of view, Darlington leads the way since it is considered to be state-of- the-art and the tritium is stored there," Mayor Hamre said. Tritium is used as a fuel in the fusion research. She noted that there would be no added transportation costs to the project to get the tritium to Darlington as there would be to get it to the Bruce station. Durham East MPP John O'Toole, who is in support of the ITER project, says: "I was expecting an announcement last week" from the Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Tourism. O'Toole says: "I've sent a letter and spoken to the minister, minister, William Saundcrson, about the ITER project." Last week, Oshawa Mayor Nancy Diamond told The Clarington Clarington Independent the City of Oshawa had heard the provincial provincial government would support the fusion facility. The City of Oshawa has also decided to back Claring- ton's bid to have the multimillion multimillion project brought to this municipality. "Clarington has, the full backing of Oshawa..
