Page 3 The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, November 20,1996 Oshawa's GM Fab Plant Sold The General Motors Fabrication Plant in Oshawa may be sold by the end of this year. GM of Canada announced on November 19 that a memorandum memorandum of understanding has been signed with Peregrine Incorporated to sell the Oshawa Fabrication plant and the Windsor Trim Plant, along with the Delphi Interior and Lighting Systems plants in Michigan. Peregrine Incorporated is a company formed by the investment firm Joseph Littlejohn & Levy and veteran automotive automotive executive Edward J. Guida. Negotiations between Peregrine and General Motors will now focus on details that should result in a final sales agreement agreement by the end of 1996. "This will allow the buyer to focus capital and other resources on earning replacement business for these plants, and we are convinced that this sale is in the best interest of our employees and the communities in which these plants operate," said Maureen Kempston Darkes, president and general manager for General Motors of Canada. Uncertainty Over Workfare Plan Continued from Page I The delegation list included Sid Ryan of the Ontario Division of CUPE; Dr. Kevin Arsenault, the Director of the Jesuit Centre for Social Faith & Justice, Toronto; Rev. Dr. Mervyn Russell of the Orono United Church, as well as NDP MPP for Welland-Thorold and critic for Poverty Issues, Peter Komos. Edwards said "this matter has been the most complex our department has examined. It has produced over 1,000 pages of information." Clarington's representative on the Health and Social Services Committee, Councillor Carson Elliott, says: "Since the government has stated that there is a voluntary component component to Ontario Works I am in favour of the program." He noted when it comes up at the next regional council meeting he will be voting in favour of the Durham Region being involved. "All I know is that the guy on the street -- Joe and Jane Taxpayer -- want it," he added. "The provincial government, government, unlike the NDP, is going to do it right. There will not be any work gangs like in Florida where people are chained together. It won't be like that here in Ontario." He noted he is anxious to see what the staff of the Social Services Department come up with in their next report to the ' committee. Regional Councillors may get their chance to debate workfare on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
