Book of Poems Released "The Rollercoaster," a book of poems by Newcastle resident, Pat Lake, has recently been published. On Saturday, Saturday, November 23rd, the author was at the Village Card and Gift Shoppe to personally sign copies of her book. With Pat Lake are store owners Joan Kimball and Liz Walton. The poems were written since 1992/93, when Lake first began to keep a daily journal of her feelings feelings and emotions. She also writes short stories, one of which has been included in the book. Bowmanville Business And Professional Club Durham Environmental Network Network (DEN)'s "Let's Have a Green Christmas" event is fast approaching! On Thursday, December 5th at the Scugog Centre (1655 Reach St., beside the arena) in Port Perry, David and Elizabeth Elizabeth Morley, authors of the book "Under The Tree Creative Creative Alternatives To A Consumer Consumer Christmas will discuss suggestions for returning the Christmas season to its original meaning. As well, there will be sixteen exhibitors selling a variety of "alternative" Christmas gifts. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the speakers will begin at 7:30. ' Exhibitors for this event include, include, Unicef, Bridgehead and World Wildlife Fund volunteers, volunteers, a local reflexologist, a person who sells a variety of objects crafted from recylced materials, providers of environ- mentally-safe cleaning and laundry products, massage and aromatherapy, organic foods, beautifully-crafted cloth bags, beeswax candles, mats made from recycled tires, Green CAP (Conservation Action Plan) Friends of Kawartha Region Region Conservation, and The Organic Gardener (a pesticide- free lawn care company). Due to a death in the family, the President, Judy Hagerman, was absent so Irene Konzel- mann took charge of the meeting. meeting. After a delicious dinner enjoyed by 13 members and five guests, Barbara Hicks introduced introduced the speaker, Phillippa Schmiegelow, who spoke about Annie E.C. Higbee who lived in the house Phillippa Schmiegelow has lived in for 20 years. This old house is across the street from the Anglican Church in Newcastle. Annie E.C. Higbee became one of the first female doctors in Ontario. She practised in Peace River, where her patients included travellers and natives. She returned returned to Ontario, practised in Newcastle and went to Burlington Burlington to live with her son after after her husband died. She died in a rest home in Milton when she was nearly 101 years old. Years ago women were not accepted in colleges or medical schools. It was not until 1880 that Victoria College in Co- bourg admitted women. In 1852 Emily Stowe became first female principal of a school and in 1864 graduated from a medical school in New York and practised medicine "illegally" in Toronto. Barbara Hicks thanked the speaker and presented her with a gift.
