The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Monday, December 23, 1996 9 Your Guide To: Health, Hobbies and Entertainment Seventh Day Adventist Handbell Choir a Ringing Success Members of the Bowmanville Seventh Day Adventist Handbell Choir and the choirs of Tyrone and Eldad United Churches have been performing a series of special Christmas Christmas concerts in Clarington. Handbell Choir members are pictured above, during a recent recent rehearsal. In the immediate foreground are Deniese Kerr (right) and Karen Hal- minen, two members of the ensemble. The Bowmanville Seventh Day Adventist handbell choir is just the group to ring in the festive season. The eight-member ensemble ensemble has been together for about two and a half years now and is performing a style of music that is . relatively new to North America. "It's been around for hundreds hundreds of years in England," explains Helga Tilk, the choir director. And, although handbells handbells are a little less common here, they are growing in popularity. The unique feature of a handbell choir is the fact that each performer is responsible for only a few notes. Usually, one performer plays bells representing representing two notes, although advanced ringers can sometimes sometimes handle four. Each player is responsible for their notes and must chime in at the correct place in the music. The bells can create a wide variety of sounds, depending depending how they are sounded. sounded. For instance, they can deliver deliver a soft, muted tone when they are played against the cushioned surface of the table on which they rest. The clapper clapper of the bell can be moved with the fingertips for yet another another sound or they can be swung back and forth in a gentle arc to imitate the pealing pealing of a full-sized bell in the steeple of a cathedral. Frequently, Frequently, however, the bells are held at shoulder height and rung by a motion of the elbow and wrist. The clapper inside the bell can also be adjusted adjusted to alter the volume and sound. "The music is very specialized," specialized," adds the director, who notes that arrangements may be limited to two octaves octaves if there are not enough bells and players for more. Choirs with a full complement complement of bells and performers have a range of about three octaves. One of the factors limiting the size of a handbell group is the price of its instruments. At first glance, they may look like the kind of old-fashioned bell which sat on a teacher's desk and summoned kids from recess. But they are, in fact, sophisticated musical instruments. instruments. The bells used by the local group arc specially cast in Pennsylvania and can cost $200 each. Along with the choirs of Eldad United Church and Tyrone Tyrone United Church, the Bowmanville Seventh Day Adventist Handbell Choir has performed concerts at Kirby on December 15th and at Eldad Eldad and Tyrone on December 22. They were also heard at the Bowmanville DBIA / Moonlight Magic event December December 6lh and at a number of other local churches. New Year's Eve Dance w?
