2 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Monday, December 23, 1996 Section Two St. Marys Toros Go Undefeated on Way To 'A' Championship The Bowmanville Toro Juvenile Juvenile team, sponsored by St. Marys Cement, travelled to Fort Erie for the 18th Annual Invitational Tournament held November 22-24 and came away as champions. The team was matched up against Brampton, Jordan, and the local local favourites Fort Erie in the round-robin and came away with three straight victories to finish first overall going into the semi-finals. In game one they had to play the home team, and despite a lot of support for the locals, the Toros came away with a hard earned 3-2 victory. It wasn't until Bowmanville found themselves themselves one man short due to a minor penalty that the first goal was scored. Surprisingly enough it went to the Toros when Darryl Cook found the back of the net on an unassisted unassisted play. Allen Lacey notched two quick goals in the second to put the team comfortably in the drivers seat. However, two late goals by the home team with less than four minutes remaining remaining in the game made for an exciting finish with the Toros Toros just hanging on for the win behind the goaltending of Cameron Millar. Game two against Brampton saw the Juveniles jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from Cory Scott and Jason Hoffman. However, the Brampton team began to fight back, eventually beating Jeff Parry in the Toro net to cut the lead in half midway through the period. Mike Nesbitt restored restored the two goal margin with just 41 seconds left in the period. Brampton came out determined determined to even the game in the third, but some good defence defence from the Toros and solid netminding by Parry held them to a late goal to make the final score 3-2. The final game of the round robin was no contest as the team easily defeated Jordan 8- 1. Cook led the assault with three goals with Nesbitt, Lacey, Lacey, Greg McMurter, Nick Hand and Paul Lavallee adding singles. In the semi-final the team met Brampton again, but this time Brampton took the lead in the first period and held the Toros at bay until midway through the final stanza when McMurter decided to take things into his own hands and scored two goals in three minutes minutes to lead the team into the final with a 2-1 win. The final matched the undefeated undefeated Bowmanville team against the home favourite Fort Erie team. With the crowd strongly behind the home team, and the close game that was played in the opening match, it seemed like the Toros might have a tough time on their hands to maintain their unbeaten record and win the tournament. With Jeff Parry getting the start in goal, the two teams played very cautiously cautiously for the first period, but the two goaltenders were unbeatable unbeatable and the second period began scoreless. However, it didn't stay that way for too long as one minute into the period, period, Lavallee took a pass from Matt Staley to fire the puck past the Fort Erie keeper. Two minutes later, Staley increased the margin when he took a pass from Lacey to make it 2-0. The Fort Erie team replied immediately, immediately, and seven seconds later they made it 2-1. The period ended this way and a fine game was capped when Lacey added two goals and Scott one to round out the scoring and give the St. Marys Cement Toros the victory and the championship. championship. As the Blue Jays begin to Shape and mould this year's edition, it appears that Quantrill will begin in the bullpen,, perhaps in a long relief role. That may not translate into a lot of work with the likes of Roger Clemens, Cy Young award winner Pat Hengten, and Juan Guzman heading up the starting staff. "Throughout my career, I've been pegged for every job in pitching," said Quantrill. "I'm not a betting man, but I can guarantee that if I'm healthy and throwing well, they won't keep me just in a long relief role. I'll get to pitch a lot.
