Residents Collect Toys, Food for Salvation Army Motorists checking out the Christmas lights in the Old Scugog Road district have shown their appreciation by dropping off 1,610 pounds of food and toys for the needy. Residents Karen and Dave McCauley, who set up the Salvation Army drop box in front of their Andelwood Court home on Dec. 2, say the donations were still pouring in during the last week of the drive. "We've been doing this food box for the Salvation Army for three years," Karen McCauley explains. "The response has been overwhelming. The first year, we raised 2,000 pounds and this year it's 1,610 and still counting." McCauley and some of her neighbors figured they could fill the charity drop-box with donations from all the cars that drive through to see the lights. Well, they did far better than that. "It was nuts as usual," McCauley jokes about the traffic this season. "The busiest time was the Sunday before Christmas; we emptied the box twice that night." People have been generous, she says. "It's wonderful. They've dropped off new toys, clothes and a total of $100." The Salvation Army drop-box will likely be set up in the Old Scugog Rd. neighborhood next Christmas.
