Novice Select Eagles became the 'D' champions champions at the Bewdley National Novice Tournament on Sunday, January 19. The boys were ready to play hard against the Humber Valley San Jose Sharks. The Eagles opened the scoring scoring in the first period at the 4:52 mark with a goal unassisted by Mike Murphy. The next goal of the game came to Eagles right wing Chris Marchant, on an assist by Sean Northam with 2:42 remaining in the first period. The Sharks scored at 2:35 of the second period making it 2-1 for the Eagles. Flying into the third period the Eagles kept their spirits high and put a lot more pressure on the Sharks again scoring by Murphy at the 9:02 mark, unassisted, to make it 3-1. At 7:32 of this period the Sharks scored on a scramble in front of the net for a 3-2 game. With the Eagles fans loudly cheering on their favourite team, Stephen Thomas set up Murphy at 5:41 to make the final score of 4-2 for the Eagles. The last few minutes were exciting as the boys were determined to keep the two goal lead. When the team and the fans counted down the last 10 seconds the Eagles knew the championship championship was theirs. Congratulations are extended to the team players and their coaching staff. The Eagles lineup lineup consists of forwards: Daniel VanWinkle, Chris Marchant, Sean Northam, Keegan Lawson, Ryan Webb, Justin Lidston, Stephen Thomas, Mike Murphy and Ryan Cross. The defencemen for the Eagles are: Matthew Smith, Jeffrey Ward, David Connelly, Jason Cadwell, Jesse Aide, and Patrick Dwyer. The outstanding goalies in this game were Ralph Hamelinck and Tim Dale. The Novice Select Eagles are coached, trained and managed managed by Mike .Dale, Mike Thomas, Rick Cross, Wayne Lidston, Glen Smith and Lynne Dale. IGA Ties Horner's IGA and Horner's Midgets played to a 2-2 tie in a penalty free game. IGA found themselves behind early in the first period and had to fight back in the second to draw even on a goal by Greg Koenderman assisted by Mike McCrary and Paul Drummond. Shortly afterwards, Horner's again took the lead, but it was short lived as a minute later Chris Watson scored on a slap shot from the point with assists going to Mike McCrary and Paul Drummond. Jackson Heating & Electric 5 Raxx 5 -- Square Boy Pizza Toros Gain Split with Belleville On the weekend of January 11-12, the Square Boy Pizza Major Novice Toros travelled to Belleville for two games with the Bobcats. The Toros gained a split in the two games. In game one the boys came out flying and dominated the Cats. A 5-2 lead looked good, but a couple of lapses and they hung on for a 5-4 win. The line of Brian Corcoran, Corey Bradbum and Derek Vanschyndel had a big day for the Square Boy team. Corcoran (2g, 2a), Bradbum (2g, la), and Vanschyndel (lg, 2a). Jordan Gross added the other goal, and Jeff Hatfield picked up an assist. Game two was a much different story as the Square Boy team were outplayed from start to finish by the Bobcats. Final score, Bobcats 6, Toros 2. Scoring for the Toros were: Brian Corcoran from Derek Vanschyndel; Vanschyndel from Jordan Gross and Jeff Nieuwenhuis. Peewee Eagle Selects Enjoying Great Season The Clarington Peewee Eagles Selects have participated in 30 tournament and exhibition games. In experiencing competition against 25 different Peewee hockey teams, at many different classifications, classifications, this team has learned not to take teams at any level too lightly! Amassing a record of 20 wins, 1 tie, 9 losses, these Eagles have been unfortunate in having lost four games in shootouts, and one to overtime. On this Peewee Eagles Select team, the leadership is evident in every player. Each team in the C.R.H.L. Peewee Division has a player representing them. No doubt they can be viewed on those teams as leaders! That is just another quality the boys exhibit while representing their league and community wherever they play.
