But it wasn't easy. North York trailed Newtonbrook 1-0 with 27 seconds left in the championship championship game of the provincial provincial tournament held this past weekend in Cobourg. A late goal, and another in overtime, qualified North York for the Canadian championships in Vancouver from March 6- 10. It was the fourth win of the tournament for the Aeros, who had little trouble trouble advancing through to the championship game. In the round robin, the Aeros, who were the first overall seed heading into the provincial tournament, defeated Peterborough 7-1, and Mississauga 6-1. In the semi-final, the Aeros shutout Scarborough 7-0, while Newtonbrook beat Mississauga 3-2, in overtime, to set up the championship showdown. West had a productive tournament offensively, scoring four times while adding three assists. It will be the second year in a row that the North York Aeros have represented Ontario at the Canadian championships. Last year, the Aeros advanced to the gold medal game, but lost a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to Quebec. Blessings Travel Tykes Inspired Blessings Travel Tykes played one of their more inspired games on January 29, defeating a hustling Orono Tykes by a 6-2 margin. margin. Scoring for Blessings were: Mathew Sankey (2g), Andrew Rynold (2g, la), Matt Wright (2g, la), Dan Dwyer, Mike Harwood and Brandon Devries (la) each. For Orono: Mark Frânko (lg, la), Troy Webster (lg), and Chantel Graham (la). This most entertaining game saw both teams skate and check with reckless abandon. Blessing's strong defence of Wade Picked, Tyler Carefoote, Andrew Rynold and Danny Dwyer were backed by the fine goaltending of Dylan Burns, who made some real key saves. Skylight Drops Tourney Final 4-3 Skylight played Aamco Home Improvements in house league action. Both teams played tight defensive hockey, but Skylight opened the scoring late in the first period on a point shot by Mike Distephano with Glen Ferguson assisting. Five minutes into the second period, Aamco tied the score. Skylight Donuts continued continued to press and regained the lead with 38 seconds to go in the period on a goal by Joel Tymchuk with Mike Wood and Bill Kift drawing assists. The score remained 2-1 throughout the third period. Aamco pulled their goalie for an extra forward, but John Kinghan sealed the victory for Skylight with 10 seconds remaining in the game. Distephano and Tymchuk assisted. Skylight Donuts Bantams travelled to Grafton on January 25, for tournament action. Skylight's first game was against the host Grafton Bantams. Speed, high powered powered offense, tight defense and stand up goaltending resulted in a five goal first period for Skylight. The Donut boys would cruise to a 9-0 shutout over Grafton. Skylight's next game was against Port Hope. Skylight continued where they left off and defeated Port Hope 6-0. These two shutout victories victories put Skylight in the "A" Championship against the undefeated Kingston Bantams. Skylight built a three goal lead well into the second period, but hard work by Kingston resulted in a 4-3 squeaker over Skylight. The goaltending dual of Steve Smith and Derek Lindsay shared in two shutout victories. victories. Dave McClinton opened the scoring for Skylight 35 seconds into the game with Ian Cuthbertson assisting. Cuthbertson put Skylight up by two with McClinton returning the favour. A minute later, Cuthbertson found the mark again with Tyler Gibson and John Kinghan assisting. With two minutes remaining in the first period, Joel Tymchuk scored with Mike Wood and Bill Kift assisting. Lange's scored two goals early in the second to make the score 4- 2 in favour of Skylight. Kinghan would pick up Skylight by scoring at the 11 minute mark with Kift drawing the assist. Assists to Tymchuk and Kinghan on Cuthbertson's third goal with just under six minutes to go in the game made the final 6-2 in favour of Skylight. The next evening, January 28, Skylight's opponent was the much improved Kool Enterprises. Kool's scored two, first period period goals. Skylight would finally get on the board with just over a minute to go in the second period on a goal by Dave McClinton with Glen Ferguson drawing the only assist. The score remained 2-1 for Kool, who were awarded a penalty shot with just over three minutes to go in the third. Their shooter made no mistake and made the score 3-1. Skylight would score 23 seconds later on a goal by Mike Wood, assisted by Ian Cuthbertson. With Skylight's goalie on the bench for the final minute, Skylight pressed but could not score.
