4-H Club Members Get First Aid Certificates Recently, nine Durham East 4-H members took on a new, challenging club known as One-Person Basic First Aid. The nine members were Aaron Bowman, Dianne Bowman, Kathryn Cartwright, Robert Doggett, Brad Found, Katharine Found, Stephen Found, Tim Hutchinson and Janelle Kellogg. Meeting one was basically an information meeting. It was held on Monday, January 6, '97 at the Welcome Fire Hall at 7:00 p.m. During this meeting we elected officers President: Aaron Bowman, Vice President: Katharine Found, Secretary: Kathryn Cartwright and Press Reporter: Janelle Kellogg. Our two leaders were David and Mary Lou Kellogg and our certified instructor for First Aid was Cindy Osland. Breathing Problems Meeting two was the meeting meeting in which we looked at breathing problems. This meeting meeting was held on Saturday, January 11, 1997 at the Welcome Fire Hall at 10:00 a.m. We opened the meeting then started learning right away. Cindy explained what an obstructed airway was and showed us how you would deal with one. We got these little dummies called. "Actars" with only a head, shoulders and chest, . to practice on. We learned how to do this on adults, children and infants for when they Were both conscious and unconscious. Cindy had baby "Actars" for our use too. We were learning well, so she told us also how to deal with severe bleeding cases. We then broke for lunch. After lunch we talked some more about baby Rescue Breathing and then had a quiz about Rescue Breathing for adults, children and infants. Heart Problems In our third meeting, we looked at problems dealing with the heart. The meeting was held on Saturday, January 18, 1997 at the Welcome Fire Hall. Cindy explained to us about different heart problems and what causes them. We did some reading from our First Aid Book then again got to use the "Actars" for practice. This will make you tired. We again also learned about doing this procedure on adults, children and infants because it is different different for each. Cindy also taught us some extra things about frost bite and hypothermia. Meeting four was also our Achievement Night. We opened the meeting and then we put on our scenario of a bus accident. We all showed what we learned and when the scenario scenario was over Cindy had us explain what we did, so our audience would understand. Cindy then told our parents a little about the club. After that we each got our bar for completing the 4-H club. We all passed the First Aid course, so we all received cards saying that we were certified. We then handed out treats to everyone of juice and donuts.
