Gary & Bill Warner Auctioneer (905) 355-2106 NOTE: No Sale Saturday Obituary JEWELL Mabel Jane A life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, Mabel Jane Jewell, aged 91, died in Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville, Monday, January 20,1997. She had been ill for one year. The daughter of the late William and Maria Jewell, she was born in Darlington Township, and educated educated at Shaw's Public School and Bowmanville High School. She never married. A resident of 16 Carlisle Ave., Bowmanville for 74 years, she also resided on Horsey Street and "Prospect Farm", Bowmanville Bowmanville previously. . Mabel started work back in 1923 for Bell Telephone, Bowmanville as a junior operator and became chief operator in 1928. She transferred to the commercial department in 1937 and handled business arrangements until her retirement. She did not miss a day of work in over 37 years. Left to mourn her passing is her sister Rena Snowden, aged 96, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters Verna .Phare and Ruby Cox and brother Bert Jewell. The Reverend Frank Lockhart officiated at the funeral service held complete on Wednesday in the Morris Funeral Chapel. The organist was Mr. Ross Metcalf. Interment Bowmanville Cemetery. Cemetery. Elizabethville W.l. News by Edna Thickson On Tuesday last week the Women's Institute. met at Georgina Rose's home. There was a very good crowd attending. Irene Beatty our president opened the meeting meeting with the singing of the W.L Ode followed by the repeating of the Mary Stewart Collect. The Roll Call was answered by 10 members and one visitor. The secretary Leta McAllister read the minutes. They were approved as read. Helen Woodward gave a report from the district meeting. The Branches of our district are invited to join together, at Bailieboro February 19 as our W.L was formed 100 years ago on Februaiy 19th, 1897. Most of our members are planning to go to Bailieboro for the 100th anniversary. Vivian Quantrill and Betty Mercer are taking part in a reading. Georgina had the program and she told us about her work as a Traffic Analyst. - P.R.O. Edna Thickson Obituaries Morley "Grant" Flintoff The death of Morley "Grant" Flintoff, aged 53, occurred suddenly suddenly at Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville on Sunday, September 29, 1996. Grant is the son of Lyra (Freeman) Flintoff and the late Morley Flintoff. Born and raised in Bowmanville, he attended Maple Grove Public School and Bowmanville High School. Married to Lynda Hately in May 1966, they had two sons, Kevin and Jeff and resided in Bowmanville. Grant worked at General Motors in Oshawa for almost 34 years. Friends and co-workers dedicated a golf trophy case in his memory, which is displayed in the plant. Being .an avid sports fan, Grant was a member of the Bowmanville Golf and Country Club as well as Hockin Oldtimers Hockey Club and the Newcastle Oldtimers Hockey Club. He is survived by his wife Lynda, sons Kevin and Jeff, mother Lyra Flintoff, sisters Jean Arnold and husband Syd, Marilyn Gordon and husband Gary, and Barb Fogal, as well as in-laws Jack and Muriel Hately, brothers-in-law Larry Hately and wife Nadia, and John Hately, and nieces and nephews. The funeral was held at the Morris Funeral Chapel in Bowmanville on October 2,1996 with Rev. Nancy Knox of St. Paul's United Church officiating, and organist Ross Metcalf. Music chosen by the family was "Wind Beneath My Wings" and "The Rose" by Bette Midler. Pallbearers, who were friends of the deceased, were Art Hester, George Sainsbury, Dave Green, Ron Clemens, Bill Perry, Siegi Rohr, Bob Sheridan, and Hugh German. Friends of Kevin's and Jeff's acted as flower bearers. After the service, lunch was provided provided by St. Paul's U.C.W. Along with the many floral arrangements, donations were made to the Heart and Stroke Fund and to Bowmanville Memorial Hospital. Some of the group donations and floral arrangements were from General Motors, Goodyear Canada, The Paul Revere Insurance Company, Mackie Automotive Systems, Hockin Oldtimers Hockey Club, Newcastle Oldtimers Hockey Club, Bowmanville Golf and Country Club, Wednesday Night Golf League, Bowmanville Eagles, Clarington Minor Hockey Association, and many of the hockey hockey clubs Grant was associated with, as well as those from individual friends. The interment was at Bowmanville Cemetery. Grant was a wonderful, loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend who will be sadly missed by all. He is always remembered and loved forever. 7-1 SC Lorna Viola (Rahm) Graham On Tuesday, December 10th, 1996, Lorna Viola Graham, 70, took her place amongst the angels after a lengthy battle with cancer. . 1 Born to Walter and Loverne Rahm, February 18th, 1926, Lorna spent her early years on the Rahm homestead-farm in Union (Cone. 9 W., near Enfield). She was educated at Union and Enniskillen Public Schools, where upon graduation gained employment employment with Dr. H. Ferguson of Bowmanville, as a domestic. At this time she attended St. Paul's United Church and was a member of the C.G.l.T. She stayed in Bowmanville until her marriage at her parents' home in Enniskillen, to Roy Graham on June 6,1945. Roy and Lorna resided in Enniskillen at her grandparents' (the Griffins) home for a short time. They then spent six months living in Imperial Village, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia during the time Roy was stationed there during W.W.II. After their time in Nova Scotia, they moved to Haydon Village where they lived from 1946 until 1989, raising five children. In 1989 they moved to R.R. #4, Marmora, where Roy still resides. Lorna was a member of Haydon United Church where she taught Sunday School and was the assistant organist. With the Haydon U.C.W., Lorna baked, served and catered many First of July suppers and church banquets in Bowmanville. When Haydon Church was closed she became a member of Tyrone United Church and was a member of their choir. She helped Roy as secretary, secretary, gas maid and car tester when he first opened Graham's Garage in Haydon! , . , Lorna's life was built around her husband and family. She was a kind, loving, and most of all, patient mother and wife, possessing many talents. Lorna enjoyed very much.going to flea markets, refinishing refinishing furniture, knitting and crocheting as well as many other hobbies. hobbies. She was an avid collector of fine china, stuffed bears, vases, precious and semi-precious rocks alike, bottles, antique furniture, angels and memorabilia. Shè loved to raise plants and work in her garden, as well as knitting and crocheting outfits for dolls and afghans for her children and grandchildren. Most of all Lorna loved life, and all of the people and things around her. Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Roy, her children Rena, Ian, Kyle, Gail and Sybil as well as their respective spouses, Tom, Cheryl, Barbara, Ray and Fred. Her sister Isabelle Perger, her brothers Kenneth and his wife Bernice, Ronald and wife Ethel and Clem and friend Shirley, as well as her 13 grandchildren, who all loved her very much and will continue to do so. All miss her very much and hold comfort in her beliefs and the legacy she has passed on. She was also predeceased by her infant son David, her sister Doreen Smiley and her parents Walter and Loverne Rahm. Funeral service was held on Thursday, December 12th at the Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home, Bowmanville. A beautiful service was conducted by Reverend Norma Seli, with organ accompaniment accompaniment by Arlene Ayre. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Craig, Darren and Leslie Graham, Christopher Potts, Shawn Cameron and grandson-in-law Christopher Morand. Flower bearers and helpers helpers were her grandchildren Charlene (Potts) Morand, Shanna, Krista and Kory Cameron, Amanda Smith, Sadie and Samuel Graham. Preparation Time: 25 min. Cooking Time: 30 min. Makes 36 cocktail-size tarts* or one deep 9-inch (23 cm) deep pie 2 tbsp (25 mL) butter 1 cup (250 mL) sliced Ontario Ontario Mushrooms 1 cup (250 mL) shredded Ontario Ontario Cabbage 1/4 cup (50 mL) each chopped Ontario Onion and Carrot 1 large Ontario Apple, thinly sliced 2/3 cup (150 ml.) milk 2/3 cup (150 mL) light sour cream 3 eggs, lightly beaten 3/4 cup (175 mL) shredded Swiss-style cheese 1/4 tsp (1 mL) each ground nutmeg and salt, Paprika Pastry* 1/2 cup (125 mL) each: allpurpose allpurpose flour and whole-wheat flour 1/2 tsp (2mL) salt 1/3 cup (75mL) cold shortening shortening 2-3 tbsp (25-45 mL) cold water water Pastry: In bowl, combine flours and salt. With pastry blender, cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add water, a little at a time, mixing lightly with fork. Shape dough into ball with hands. Roll out dough on lightly lightly floured surface into circle. Place loosely in deep 9-in. (23 cm) pie plate. Trim pastry 1 in. (2.5 cm) from edge. Fold edge under and flute. Prick pastry with fork. Bake in 375°F (190°C) oven for 15 min. Cool. Meanwhile, in non-stick skillet, skillet, melt butter over medium- high heat. Cook mushrooms, cabbage, onion and carrot until soft. Cool slightly. Spoon into pie shell. Arrange apple slices over vegetable mixture. In bowl, whisk together milk, sour cream and eggs. Stir in cheese, nutmeg and salt. Pour over apple. Sprinkle with paprika. paprika. Bake in 350°F (180°C) oven for 35 to 40 min. or until set. Cut into wedges to serve. ♦Appetizer Tarts: Double pastry recipe when making tarts. There is sufficient sufficient filling to make 3 dozen small tarts. Bake pastry for 12 min. and filled tarts for 15 min. Follow directions above.
