The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, February 22,1997 Page 11 Maple Grove United Church kicked off its 125th anniversary year with a Gourmet Dinner on Saturday, February 8th. The dinner was planned, prepared, and served by the men of the church. When guests arrived, they were seated in the sanctuary. At the appropriate-time, the doors to the hall were opened and the candlelight atmosphere atmosphere setting for the dinner was displayed. Waiting to escort the ladies to the table were the servers dressed in black trousers, white shirts and black bow ties. As soon as all the guests were seated the blessing was. given by Bert Snowden. Following the meal an entertaining programme took place with Tim Groen acting as Master of Ceremonies. To put the guests in a relaxing mood a sing-song of "Love" songs was led by Jim Cryderman. Terry Head, oùr church organist and master chef for the delightful dinner, performed a masterpiece on Maple Grove Women's Institute From page 5 the Women's Institute founded founded at Stoney Creek on February 19th, 1897. Mrs. Hoodless was instrumental instrumental in getting the McDonald Institute at Guelph University for young women. She also was the one who got 4-H Clubs started for girls. Laura Rose Stephens gave us our Motto "For Home and Country". Home is the foundation foundation on which our country is made. F.W.I.O. changed women's lives but women must continue continue to face the new changes in the future. The W.I. is a group that can bind the Community together. The W.I. has given us many new adventures including learning new crafts. Now some groups have taken up ballroom dancing to include the men. We need to share in W.I. work for Home and Community. Mrs. Found closed with a reading on "change". With Mrs. R. Metcalf at the piano and Mrs. Found leading we learned the new W.I. Centennial song. At this time, Mrs. Metcalf read a letter that informed us that Mrs. H. Bradley had been chosen as one of the 100 women to be honoured this Centennial Year and she will receive a plaque at the Area Convention. Mrs. Metcalf presented Myrtle with a bouquet of flowers - after which Myrtle expressed her thanks. This is quite an honour for our W.I. Mrs. A. Hall read a couple of Valentine poems. We all sang the Institute Theme song to close the meeting. We were able to look over our Tweedsmuir History Books and view the video of our own 50th anniversary last April. Several group pictures were also taken. Press Reporter Win Brown the piano entitled "The Second Movement" from Haydn's Piano Sonata. Harold Curwin entertained the audience by playing some down east tunes on the accordion. accordion. For a change of pace a comedy skit "I'll Call the Doctor" was performed by Jim Cryderman and Terry Kelsey. A special guest, (and former Maple Grove Church member) Ross Metcalf, enthralled the audience with two Scottish tunes. He sang these two numbers dressed in his kilt for special effect.. A second comedy skit entitled "A Quiet Weekend" was performed performed by Tim Groen and Randy Snowden. A piano duet featuring Terry Head and Jim Cryderman played a couple couple of numbers "Panis Angelicuss" and "Tales of Vienna Woods". The entertainment entertainment concluded with all the men, having been divided into four groups and each placed in a corner of the hall, singing effectively in a round "Row, Row, Row, Your Boat". The evening ended with the servers singing appropriately "Good Night Ladies". The audience responded with a standing ovation at the conclusion conclusion of the entertainment. Five lucky ladies won door prizes which were selected intermittently during the entertainment. A big thank you goes out to all the men who helped make this evening a huge success. success. Maple Grove will continue its 125th Anniversary Celebrations on Saturday, May 10th and Sunday, October 19th. On May 10th, 1997 there will be an Open House to display pictures, stories, paintings and other memorabilia to outline 125 years of history. In conjunction conjunction with the Open House a yard sale, bake auction, and silent auction will take place. Church souvenirs will be available to purchase as well. We would like anyone who was a former member or a relative relative of a former member who may have pictures, write-ups, memorabilia, etc. to loan for this special Open House to please contact Tim Groen at 697-1574, or Helen Souter at 623-3736. A special Anniversary Service has been scheduled for Sunday, October 19th at 2:00 p.m. A guest speaker will be invited as well as former former clergy. Former choir members will be invited as well to take part in a mass choir for our joyous celebration. celebration.
