Page S The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, March 5,1997 Clarington Councillors Object To Higher GTA Licence Fees Clarington Mayor Diane Hamre wants the Ontario government government to stop charging a premium on vehicle and drivers' licences for those living in the Greater Toronto Area. She told the members of the General Purpose and Administration Committee on Monday, March 3, "because we live in the GTA, our licence fees are above the fees charged to drivers in the rest of the province." She noted when she last renewed her licence, it cost $90. Residents outside the GTA pay $60. A motion brought forward by Mayor Hamre and Councillor Larry Hannah asks that the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) "remove the premium charged to GTA residents residents for drivers' licenses and vehicle licences and that the fee be reduced to a uniform provincial rate." Mayor Hamre said the fee was intended to offset the higher cost of road repair in the GTA. Since die provincial authorities are no longer providing higher subsidies for road work here, Clarington councillors want to see the premium removed from GTA licence fees. Councillor Mary Novak noted diis extra charge is one of "a number of fees being charged for what the province has downloaded." downloaded." Clarington's request is to be sent to Durham East MPP John O'Toole, Premier Mike Harris, the MPPs of Durham Region, other municipalities in the GTA and local newspapers.
