Page 2 The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, March 22, 1997 Grade Three Provincial Tests All grade three students with The Northumbcrland- Clarington Board of Education will soon be participating in a province-wide test that will assess their skills in mathematics, reading and writing. And the province-wide lest will help students, students, teachers, and school boards pinpoint their strengths as well as the areas where they need to do more work. Separate School students will also be tested. The test, scheduled to take place over ten days in March and early April, represents "the first time the province has ever engaged in an assessment at the elementary school level that provides individual student results," says Trudy Lum, superintendent of program for the board. The test was created by the newly-established Education Quality and Accountability Office, an independent agency set up by .the provincial government government to develop and administer administer province-wide tests, and analyze their results. The province will test the students' proficiency in calculating calculating numbers, in geometry, patternings and algebra, measurement, measurement, problem-solving and probability, and data management. management. Students' writing and reading abilities will be tested through specific fiction and non-fiction pieces. Yvonne O'Neill, a resource teacher for the board, says the provincial test "is going to give us information on reading and writing that we didn't have before." Last year, the board tested all students, in grade three in mathematics. The test last year, says O'Neill, was . only like a 45-minute snapshot of student achievement in mathematics in comparison to this year's test which will be like a 10-day video," which includes reading and writing. "Last year's test covered the mathematics curriculum for grade three, with each student completing a sampling of questions. questions. This year, all students will take part in the test but it will be an end of division check up," she says. Kids Clothing Giveaway On Sunday A local children's clothing store is offering some of its unsold end-of-the-scason merchandise to the public free of charge this Sunday. The give-away will take place at the Edna Thomson Child Care Centre on Church St., in Bowmanvillc, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 23. Channcz Chatterton, co-owner of The Kids Klosct, explained how the give-away works. "Our suppliers have graciously donated this clothing to go back to the community," she said. The suppliers include hundreds of local residents who bring children's clothes to the Kids Kloset for sale or to be recycled. All clothing has been washed and repaired. It is available from newborn to size 16. The clothes fill about a dozen huge garment bags, which means there should be a wide assortment. Channcz Chatterton and her sister, Dianne Smith, who co-own the store, say they are counting on the "honor system" when giving away the clothes. They're hoping only those who truly need free clothes for their children will take advantage of this offer.
