Page 4 The Claringlon/Courtice Indepencleni, Bowmanville, Saturday, March 22, 1997 Letter to the Editor botanical Park Proposed for Former Orono Nursery Property An open letter to the residents residents of The Municipality of Clarington regarding the status of the Orono Forestry Station and tree seedling nursery. March 16, 1997 Dear Community residents, ■ . The spring of 1997 is approaching and it is almost time for crocuses and snowdrops snowdrops to herald in the new season. Douglas Botanical Park and Nature Centre (DBC) would like to take this opportunity to give you an update on the status of the Orono Forestry Station and tree seedling nursery. Since before autumn 1996, when the DBC received its registration as a Canadian charity, we have been closely following all new developments developments regarding disposition of the forestry lands. This property amounts to roughly 1300 acres and, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), the Ontario Realty Corporation and Management Board of Cabinet, will be divided into three sections. The western section, roughly 300 acres, is where the majority of tree production took place. This section will be sold. The future of the millions of tree seedlings which arc still in the fields is unknown at the time of this letter. In January, 1997, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs had expressed interest in the western property as was their right as part of the process of disposition. The central section, roughly roughly 900 acres, will be retained by the crown and managed in VITAMINS Prices in effect from March 19th - April 2nd Health-wise '^atura^ourcS GINKGO 40 mg Also 90 caps-$14.80 24% FLAVOGLYCOSIDES J80 45 Caps Health-wise 9.5% GLA ■^üurâ^oürc» 500 mg EVENING ] PRIMROSE OIL Also 180 caps $10.35 5 60 90 Caps Health-wise ■reatuni^ources TIME RELEASE VIT C-1000 Also 180 caps - $15.25 WITH BIOFLAVONOID Health-wise 795 90 Caps Health-wise '^aturalSourxës FOLIC ACID 1 mg Also 180 caps - $4.95 EASY TO SWALLOW . This section section consists of the forested lands, ihc Wilmol Creek and valley lands, and is the land through which the Bunting Trail meanders. The eastern section, roughly 130 acres, was the home nursery and is where the superintendent's house is located as well as the greenhouse, greenhouse, several barns, the classrooms, and other structures. structures. The final decision has not yet been made as to whether this section will be sold together with the western section or that both will be sold as separate parcels. It is the eastern second in which the DBC has interest and it is towards this goal that we have been working together with active and visionary members of the community. The DBC is also interested in creating interpretive trails through the central forested section. The Linton Trail and the Mill Pond will be retained by the province, and, here as well, the DBC has interest. The equipment which was used by the forestry personnel will be sold either separately or together with the land. The inventory has not been made public. The entire property has been surveyed and appraised. The fair market value price of the property has been "under review" for the past two and a half months and the number has not been released to either the regional or. municipal government. These two levels of government have been waiting patiently and the municipality has the "right of first refusal" when the lands are eventually put up for sale. If Clarington decides to purchase purchase the property then the process of-disposition stops. The DBC wants to pursue a partnership with Clarington (made public during a presentation presentation by the DBC to municipal municipal council in September, 1996), but of course, it has been difficult to define this partnership since no one knows what the price will be. If Clarington decides not to purchase then the property will likely be sold by public tender. The entire issue of privith zation of provincially-owned "real property" (land), is still currently being decided upon, by the province and within Vendors Wanted for the 11th Annual Bowmanville Kinsmen %SH* ! liaw to be held in the Garnet B. In fact, there is now a new office of Privatization, to deal with this issue. For these reasons, all parties with an interest in the forestry property arc on hold. The DBC believes that the Orono properly is an invaluable invaluable natural resource and is part of one of the last remaining remaining major green spaces in central Ontario. It is an ideal location for a botanical park. In cooperation with other organizations, the DBC will, among a myriad of other things, boost the economy of the private sector throughout the area. Whatever the final outcome, sound management, public access, and a vision towards the future will be keys to ensuring that this land remains green and a significant significant part of our Canadian her itage.
