Page 6 The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, March 22, 1997 Z Your Guide To: Health, Hobbies and Entertainment Youth Team Builds Costa Rican Hospital by Lorraine Manfredo Staff Writer got back from Karen Tweedle just sunny Costa Rica. But, as a member of Youth Challenge International, this Courtice Secondary grad didn't spend her time on the beach. She was too busy putting up a health care centre in a small village near the Panamanian border. Karen Tweedle was one of 11 young men and women from Canada and Australia who raised about $4,000 each to travel to South America in December for a two-month development project. However, as Karen Tweedle explained to a group of Rotary Club members last Thursday, her group left behind more than hiking trails and a new building. "The trip wasn't just about building trails or a health care centre," she said. "It was about helping people." Karen says the construction brought the people of three neighboring villages together. Every day, about 10 villagers would hike over two hours to pitch in at the construction site. A comment from one of these villagers villagers surprised Karen. "He said it was the first time he had ever seen white people working. The only time he ever saw white people before was on TV or on the beach." For this man to see a team of white foreigners willingly involved in physical labor was a novelty. The Youth Challenge International team had to cut trees, dig into the ground and level it out to make way for the health care centre. The dimensions of the building were six meters by seven meters. The next stage of construction involved installa- between people." lion of cement posts, building and Karen Tweedle thanked the Rotary putting up trusses for the roof and mix- Club for helping to sponsor her trip, ing cement for the walls and digging digging a septic tank. The finished building has two bathrooms, two exam rooms and a waiting room. It will serve about 300 people who live in the area. "Once the foundation was dug and the cement posts went in, all of a sudden we had a building. It went up in about a week. It was just amazing." Karen was lucky to have the chance to help villagers work on a traditional grass hut. She helped build walls and patch the roof. In this indigenous community, many of the older residents fear they are loosing their roots. As a means to preserve their heritage, they teach their children the native language and show them how to build the grass huts. However, only one family still lives in grass hut. The YCI team members shared a small shelter. "All eleven of us lived there with chickens and pigs and spiders and scorpions and cockroaches. We were never alone." The Youth Challenge team worked for free and villagers would often bring them foods such as bananas, coconuts and cocoa. "It was the greatest greatest experience I ever had. I learned about creating bonds Len Koenderman, President of the Bowmanville Rotary Club, thanks Karen Tweedle for her informative talk about her recent trip to Costa Rica. As a member of a Youth Challenge International team, she spent, her time building a health care centre.
