Grade nine student Christine Frisina; Adele Jenkins and Robin Limebeer, both in Grade 10; Grade l l's Tara Arnott; Grade 12 student Jenny Ellis; and OAC student Alison Eeuwes competed in the two-day meet in Etobicoke. Although none of them came home with medals, coach Jeff Gardner says it was quite an experience experience "to be in there and swim against those people." All of BHS's OFSAA swimmers are members of ROC, the Clarington Swim Club. Gardner says that experience experience really helped the LOSSA-winning team prepare. prepare. "Their training, the mental and physical preparation, was a big part of it. A lot of it was due to the training they do with the club," says Gardner, adding that ROC helps out by sharing pool time with the high school team. Some school teams in the Golden Horseshoe area are required to pay for their own pool time, making swim teams a little less feasible. Gardner says having a pool in the Fitness Centre that adjoins the high school is a bonus for the team. "It's a big thing," he says. "Some schools in Durham talk about practice being two and a half hours because of travel time." A great deal of commitment commitment is required by swimmers swimmers who choose to be part of both the local and high school swim teams, Gardner says. "They do swim a lot of hours with- the club, and still stick it out to do the things we do," he relates, adding that the swim season lasts "from October to the March Break. It's a long season. They really feel it by the end." In spite of the fact that the girls came back from OFSAA without hardware, Eeuwes, Arnott and Ellis all made the finals in their events. Approximately 7,800 swimmers swimmers from across the province were eligible for the meet. Competitors are chosen on the basis of swim times, which explains why the BHS boys' team didn't attend OFSAA, in spite of their somewhat surprising LOSSA win. "We (the boys' team) really really never even thought we'd come close," says Gardner, who experienced the OFSAA swim meet for the first time this year in Etobicoke, in spite of the approximately eight years he has been coaching the team. Bowmanville High School was represented at the OFSAA swimming championships held in Etobicoke by the above six swimmers. Approximately 7,800 swimmers from across the province competed at the two-day meet. Swimming for Bowmanville were, front row, (l-r), Robin Limebeer, Jenny Ellis. Back row, (l-r), Tara Arnott, Christine Frisina, Adele Jenkins, Jeff Gardner (coach).
