Choosing the right breed is the first step in bull selection. selection. Cattlemen have a habit of making a breed decision based on current trends, what the bull looks like on the other other side of the fence or worse what appears to be a great bargain at the local sale bam. Cattlemen should consider breed complementarity and heterosis (hybrid vigour) when choosing a breed. Complementarity involves matching strengths of one breed with weaknesses of another another and vice versa. Heterosis Heterosis or hybrid vigour is simply the extra performance resulting resulting from the mixing of different genes from different breeds. Economically important important traits that have low heritability, like fertility and longevity, benefit the most from heterosis. Therefore breeds should be chosen so that the resulting replacement females possess a high degree of heterosis. When choosing a supplier (i.e. seedstock producer), take the time to ensure that what the producer is selecting for, closely matches your selection selection emphasis. You also need to consider the tools they use in selection and the service ypu can expect. Will they stand behind their product? Choosing the right sire is the final step. Genetic evaluations evaluations (EPD) provide a measure measure of expected performance and when balanced with common common sense and an assessment of the bulls conformation they can make selection much easier with significantly significantly less risk. Evaluating Winter Wheat by Jack Kyle, Soil and Crop Advisor The temperature during late February and early March has been up and down. This makes winter survival difficult for two important crops - winter wheat and legume legume forages. The freezing and thawing cycle along with rain, ponding and icing will inflict damage on crop roots and crowns. What can you do about this? In forages, leaving a stubble in the fall will provide provide some protection by trapping trapping a significant snow blanket blanket that will take a while to melt. With winter wheat, a similar situation applies in that it is good to have 4 to 6 inches of top going into winter. winter. Beyond this there isn't a lot you can go to prevent this type of damage. How to react this spring is your biggest management decision. decision. Access the crop in the spring once growth has resumed. resumed. It is only then that you will know the extent of the damage. If there is significant significant damage to forages you might want to reseed. There are several options for annual forage that may work in your situation. 1. Spring cereals as forage. 2. Sorghum Sudan grass as green chop or pasture in mid to late summer. summer. 3. Corn silage for fall and winter feeding. 4. Direct seeding forage this spring, will give about 50 to 60% of volume of forage you would have had if no winter kill. Each situation must be considered considered on its own merits to determine the best route to follow. Willi winter wheat, make your assessment as laic as possible in the spring.
