Page! The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, May 7, 1997 Section Two Top Tumblers Learn At Gemini Gymnast by Jennifer Herr Staff Writer Clarington gymnasts are finding it's worth the drive to Oshawa. According to Gemini Gymnastics head coach July Gershcovich, hundreds of gymnasts work out 1 at his south Oshawa club. And many of them come from outlying outlying areas, including Clarington. He says the success success his gymnasts have comes down to two major factors. "Talent helps to a certain point,.and after that, it's hard work" he says. Several of his students . have managed to put that combination together to achieve success, including Alisha Conahan, a Clarington gymnast who is currently in her second year competing on a scholarship at the University of Northern Illinois. Conahan returns to the club to train during vacations, vacations, says Gershcovich. Gymnasts of all ages train at Gemini. The club offers a Parent and Tot program for children as young as 18 months, and there is a recreational recreational program for every age group, up to and including adult. Gershcovich says up to 2000 people a year participate at the gym, about 100 of them at a competitive level. The club has people coming from throughout Durham Region, and some athletes driving; in Darlington Auto Bantams Suffer Season Ending Loss in Playoff Game from as far away as Peterborough to receive the type of training offered by the club. Gerschovich says his club allows athletes to do physical training to improve "flexibility, "flexibility, power, speed and endurance". He says success is very individual. "They have to be strong, brave, intelligent and flexible. Some work a couple of years (and find success). Some work all their life and still don't gel it." Gemini boasts an impressive impressive safety record. The club has gone live years without a serious injury. But Gershcovich says there are always typical sports injuries happening. "Like any sport, they have injuries. It's usually just overuse overuse injuries or sore ankles," says Gershcovich, adding that injuries often come during growth spurts. A number of Clarington athletes recently found success at the Gyros Classic meet in North York. Among them were (front row, doing the splits), Rachel Sarnovsky and Christine Button. Second row, (1-r), Robyn Dewhirst, Jaclyn Daly, Heather Humphries, and Brianna Heard. In the back row is Leanne Topper. The Gemini is also the home training club for Bowmanville's Alisha Conahan, who is on a full scholarship at the University of Northern Illinois. The season ended sooner than the Darlington Auto Bantams were hoping, losing their last playoff game 2-1, and leaving them with five points. Their fate was in the outcome of the game between Skylight Donuts and Aamco. A Skylight win would have put the Darlington team into the finals. However, it was not to be as Aamco played their hearts out defeating Skylight and thus sending Darlington off to think about the summer. The team and the coach, John Burrows, would like to thank the following people who have made this season a good experience. Our sponsor, sponsor, Darlington Auto, for their continued support of minor sports in Clarington. The CRHL and the hundreds of volunteers who dedicated their time and resources. The parents who through thick and thin came out to support the players. The team manager, manager, Mary Lou Naccarato, the assistant coaches, Chris Burrows and Blaine MçNeil our trainer Jim Corroran, and thank you Canadian Statesman for allowing us these write ups and your support support of minor sports. ♦ HOCKEY SKILLS \oV e v ♦ POWER SKATING V\OCK^ GOALTENDING PROGRAMS Full Day Camps/Evening Sessions Spaces Still Available for Spring, Summer & Fall Programs Iroquois Park & Newcastle Village Arena.
