Page 6 The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, May 10, 1997 Carnation Flower Shop Wins 'A' Championship After 11 tournaments, 20 league games, 20 practices and eight playoff games, Carnation Flower Shop has won the Atom 'A' championship title. This group of fine, young hockey players had a tremendous tremendous season, finishing off the regular season with 18 wins, and two losses, only to be outdone by Crow's Sports as league champs by one point. In the 11 tournaments, they won three 'A' titles, were 'A' finalists in three, a 'B' finalist in one, and were 'C finalists in the rest. At the start of the round robin playoffs the boys lost their first two games. There was concern after the. second loss from the players that they did not want all their hard work to be for nothing. The next four games they went out and played the way the fans and the coaches knew they could. The 'A' championship series featured Crow's Sports and Carnation Flower Shop. And what a series it was! In game one, there was great goaltending by Crow's tandem tandem of Dan McGuaig and Mike Larter, and Carnation's Sean Burrows. Slam Dunk Fun The Harlem Diplomates basketball team are coming to town. It will be a festive family feeling when the Harlem Diplomats bring their hoop spoofing, laugh a minute, dazzlin hoops show to Bowmanvillc High School on Friday, May 23, at 7:00 p.m. Trickery, teamwork, and high flying rim-rocking basketball basketball are guaranteed. The special guest referee will be Jenn Beech, host of BBS Master Control. Proceeds from the game will be in support of the Vincent Massey Public School Playground Project. St. Stephen's took the junior game 3-1, while Clarke's seniors shutout St. Stephen's 3-0 in the other game. Pictured above is action from the St. Stephen's victory in the junior tilt. Provincial Qualifying Meet Gets Underway in Oshawa On Saturday, May 10, athletes athletes with physical disabilities disabilities from across Central Ontario will converge on the City of Oshawa. These athletes athletes will be participating and competing in the 1997 Central Region Athletics and Boccia meet. The event will be held at the Oshawa Civic Fields, part of the Oshawa Civic Auditorium Complex. The event will be held rain or shine and will serve as the first stép for athletes who wish to compete in Provincial games this July. Opening Ceremonies will begin at 8:45 a.m., with the first event to begin at 9:00 a.m. The organizing committee committee for the 1997 Central Region Athletics and Boccia meet would like to encourage the public to come out and support our local athletes.
