The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, June 21, 1997 Page 27 Blackstock UCW News Morning Unit, UCW On Tuesday, June 10, the morning unit of the UCW met at the home of Jean VanCamp with 16 members and one visitor present. Margaret Mountjoy opened the meeting with a poem "The Things I Like". The business was dealt with. Cards were signed for Blake Gunter, Keith VanCamp, Julie Obstfeld, Allan Bailey and Bill Marlow. Lists for greeting and anniversary refreshments were discussed and convenors assigned. Shirley Gibson led a very interesting worship service using the theme "Affirmation". Everyone repeated the 23rd Palm. Shirley led us in prayer. As we were outside on the lawn, we listened to a tape of the hymn, "I Came to the Garden Alone". Paul's recognition of affirmation was read from the scriptures. A Mariner's version version of the Lord's Prayer was read. Jean VanCamp led us through an exercise tape which is done while sitting. It was enjoyed by all. The meeting closed with the Mizpah Benediction. Afternoon Unit, UCW We accepted Jean Churchill's invitation to hold our pot luck luncheon at her home at Lake Scugog. It was a beautiful day which we all enjoyed. Marion Larmer had the worship service and chose her topic from the book - "No Wrinkles on the Soul". She pointed out that aging is a journey. Stage one is preparation preparation or getting ready. Stage two is taking up you life's work and Stage three is taking taking up a new direction. You don't retire, you become redirected. redirected. Roll call was answered with what you planned to do this summer and many also read a poem which they liked. One member had a contest based on Bible knowledge, which we felt we failed. We wished each other a happy and safe summer and promised ; to meet in September. Marion closed with prayer. -- Dora Martyn St. John's News by Colin Beal St.John's will be well represented represented this week, at a special meeting of the Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Toronto. This meeting of Synod has been called to elect a Suffragan Bishop to fill the vacancy created created when Bishop Victoria Matthews was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Edmonton. Father Hugh and Kerry Umphrey are the St. John's delegates to Synod. Sunday, June 22nd, marks the end of the Church School year and various certificates will be presented to children of the church school during the Sunday morning Eucharist. The Feast of the Birth of St. John the Baptist, patron of St. John's will be celebrated at the mid-week Eucharist on Tuesday, June 24th at 7:00 p.m., the 158th anniversary of the founding of the parish. The following Sunday, June 29th, which is the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, will also be the occasion occasion of the Parish's 158th Birthday Party. The celebration celebration starts with a Eucharist at which Reverend Canon Ansley Tucker will assist. Ansley is a former priest of the Parish of Cartwright who is well-known to members of the community. Following the Eucharist, there will be games for the children and a pot luck picnic luncheon.
